Power Computing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Power Computing was a short-lived manufacturer of Apple Macintosh-compatible computers.
The computers were generally less expensive than competing offerings from Apple Computer and were often faster.
Apple bought Power Computing's Mac license and related assets in September 1997 for $100 million in stock.

 Plugging Into Computing Power Grids
April 22, 2002 (Computerworld) Grid computing has attracted a lot of attention recently as companies have begun to promote the concept of accessing unlimited computing power from anywhere in the world as easily as users now log on to the Internet.
Campus computing, which allows several projects or departments in an organization to share resources scattered across a campus, is the next step up from clusters.
In addition to biotechnology and engineering applications, grid computing is probably of most value in fields such as petroleum exploration, material sciences, crash simulations, financial market modeling, motion picture special effects and weather forecasting.

 Grid computing
Replace the fan with a personal computer and electrical power with computational power, and this gives a measure of frustration facing those who dream of distributing large computing problems to dozens, hundreds even millions of computers in the internet.
Grid computing also has a security model built in, such that a desired level of security and access control may be implemented at all levels of the grid infrastructure.
In addition to pure scientific needs, such computing power is driving a new evolution in industries such as the bio-medical field, financial modeling, oil exploration, motion picture animation, and many others.

Power, often confused with energy, is the time rate of doing work.
Although computing, display, communications, and storage technology may become efficient enough to require unobtrusive power supplies, the desire for the fastest CPU speeds and highest bandwidth possible will offset the trend.

Macintosh clone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Apple II and IBM PC computer lines had been "cloned" by other manufacturers who had reverse engineered the minimal amount of firmware in the computers' ROM chips and subsequently legally produced computers that would run the same software.
These clones were seen by Apple as a threat; Apple II sales had presumably suffered from the competition provided by Franklin Computer Corporation and other clones, legal and illegal.
The strategy of suppressing clone development was successful; from 1986 to 1991, several manufacturers created Macintosh clones, obtaining their ROMs by actually purchasing one of Apple's Macintosh computers and removing from it the required parts, then installing those parts in the clone's case.

When will computer hardware match the human brain? by Hans Moravec
Big computers at the factory--maybe supercomputers with 1,000 times the power of machines that can reasonably be placed in a robot--will process large training sets under careful human supervision, and distill the results into efficient programs and arrays of settings that are then copied into myriads of individual robots with more modest processors.
Entities rated by the computational power and memory of the smallest universal computer needed is logarithmic on both axes: each vertical division represents a thousandfold increase in processing power, and each horizontal division a thousandfold increase in memory size.

Memory in quantum computers is created by the manipulation of quantum bits.
In contrast to classical computers, where memory is a string of 'ones' and 'zeros', quantum bits (or qubits) can be in a superposition of many different states at once, so a quantum computer has the potential to be much more powerful than a classical computer.
The only physical system for which all the ingredients necessary for quantum computing have been demonstrated in the laboratory is ion trap technology, but it has not been clear whether the ion trap system is scalable in practice.

As computing chips have become faster and more powerful in recent years, companies such as Intel have worked to combat the accompanying problem of chips getting too hot or consuming more electricity than their vendors would like.
In fact, Apple Computer Inc.'s historic decision to soon switch its computers from PowerPC chips to Intel's so-called x86 chips stemmed from Apple's frustration that its PowerPC suppliers -- IBM Corp. and Freescale Semiconductor Inc. -- could not promise the same horsepower and power efficiency as Intel.
