Topic: The Power Elite

Power-elite model - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term "power elite", coined in 1956 by social-conflict theorist C.
Members of this power elite theoretically control all three major sectors of U.S. society: the economy, government, and the military.
Power-elite theory argue that the United States is no longer a democracy as the power and wealth concentrated among the power-elites overwhelms the majority of citizens, leaving them without a voice.

Mills - Power Elite   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
In so far as the structural clue to the power elite today lies in the political order, that clue is the decline of politics as genuine and public debate of alternative decisions--with nationally responsible and policy-coherent parties and with autonomous organizations connecting the lower and middle levels of power with the top levels of decision.
The shape and meaning of the power elite today can be understood only when these three sets of structural trends are seen at their point of coincidence: the military capitalism of private corporations exists in a weakened and formal democratic system containing a military order already quite political in outlook and demeanor.
We must remember that these men of the power elite now occupy the strategic places in the structure of American society; that they command the dominant institutions of a dominant nation; that, as a set of men, they are in a position to make decisions with terrible consequences for the underlying populations of the world.

 The Power Elite
The power elite theory, in short, claims that a single elite, not a multiplicity of competing groups, decides the life-and-death issues for the nation as a whole, leaving relatively minor matters for the middle level and almost nothing for the common person.
Participants in the elite tend to read the same newspapers, join the same clubs, live in the same neighborhoods, send their children to the same schools (usually private and the ones they themselves attended), and belong to the same churches and charities.
Elite theorists think that most of the participants in the middle are actually motivated by rather selfish and parochial interests.

One of the crucial arguments Mills made in The Power Elite was that the emergence of the Cold War completely transformed the Amer ican public's historic opposition to a permanent military establishment in the United States.
The Power Elite failed to foresee a situation in which at least one of the key elements of the power elite would no longer identify its fate with the fate of the country which spawned it.

Who Rules America: Power Structure Research   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
Power structure research was new because it had several methods and also a theoretical stance that stood between previous traditions in ways that will be explained in a minute by contrasting power structure research with the pluralist and Marxist approaches.
Hunter's claim that power in Atlanta was in the hands of a relatively few corporate leaders was deeply disturbing to many members of the social science community, and especially the political scientists, who had enjoyed a near monopoly on the study of policy formation and the workings of government up to that point.
They also doubted that power could be studied by a sociologist who had arrived at his basic findings by asking upper-middle-class professionals and the allegedly powerful themselves to tell him who, in their opinion, were the most powerful people in a city or community.

A Power Elite, in political and sociological theory, is a small group of people who control a disproportionate amount of wealth, and privilege and access to decision-makers in a political system.
The American Power Elite has been referenced by academics of the latter half of the 20th Century; in their research work, the US Power Elite consists of members of the Business/Corporate Community, Academia, politicians, media editors, military service personnel, and high-profile journalists.

Mills concluded that power in the United States in the 1950s was just about as concentrated as it had been since the rise of the large corporations, although he stressed that the New Deal and World War II had given political appointees and military chieftains more authority than they had exercised previously.
The power elite now shows considerable diversity, at least as compared with its state in the 1950s, but its core group continues to be wealthy white Christian males, most of whom are still from the upper third of the social ladder.
The newcomers to the power elite have found ways to signal that they are willing to join the game as it has always been played, assuring the old guard that they will call for no more than relatively minor adjustments, if that.

First published in 1956, The Power Elite stands as a contemporary classic of social science and social criticism.
Wright Mills examines and critiques the organization of power in the United States, calling attention to three firmly interlocked prongs of power: the military, corporate, and political, elite.
The Power Elite can be read as a good account of what was taking place in America at the time it was written, but its underlying question of whether America is democratic in practice as it is in theory continues to matter very much today.

What The Power Elite informed readers of in 1956 was how much the organization of power in America had changed during their lifetimes, and Alan Wolfe's astute afterword to this new edition brings us up to date, illustrating how much more has changed since then.
The Power Elite has stimulated generations of readers to think about the kind of society they have and the kind of society they might want, and deserves to be read by every new generation.

Interestingly enough, most of the prominent neo-conservatives are also part of the CFR power elite.
In fact, Quigley noted that the strategy of the establishment was and ought to be to control both parties, so that the voters could “throw the rascals out” and achieve no change in policy when it comes to matters of constitutional import and national sovereignty.
So, when all is said and done, internationalism and neo-conservatism are two un-American philosophies, each being used by the same power elite to achieve its long-sought-after goal of a “new world order.” These two philosophies ought to be rejected by Americans who love liberty and embrace national sovereignty.
