  Macworld: Power Mac G4 Cube
Cube users with USB devices they plug and unplug frequently may want to invest in a USB hub; those with FireWire devices may need to leave a loose cable dangling from the back.
Worse news for all users is that the Cube's speakers have short cables, just 26 inches from the headphone jack to each of the clear, spherical speaker cases.
Never mind that forgoing on-board analog circuitry necessitated the addition of the biggest power brick Apple has ever shipped (it has to be that big to support the large displays that might draw power from the Cube) -- you knew something had to go to fit so much computer inside a 7-inch-square plastic box.

Power Mac G4 Cube - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Power Mac G4 Cube (also known as Power Macintosh G4 Cube) was a quiet, fanless, compact Macintosh personal computer from Apple Computer.
As a result of the failure of the G4 Cube, Apple Computer's stock (which had risen to a high based on the success of the iMac G3) had dropped back to the low levels from before the iMac was released.
Nevertheless, with the release of the relatively inexpensive Mac Mini (coupled with Apple's switch to G4 processors and eventually Intel Core based processors) the Cube again faded into the background.

Power Mac G4 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The original Apple Power Mac G4 was introduced at the Seybold conference in San Francisco on 31 August 1999, with 400 MHz, 450 MHz and 500 MHz configurations available.
The last real update to the Power Mac G4 line was on 28 January 2003 offering dual 1.42 GHz PowerPC 7455 processors, with features not seen in previous DDR models: built-in FireWire 800 connector, optional integrated Bluetooth, and optional integrated AirPort Extreme.
With the launch of the Power Mac G5 on 23 June 2003, Apple quietly re-introduced the August 2002 Power Mac G4 because of perceived demand for Mac OS 9 machines.

Apple Computer Inc. sliced the Power Mac G4 Cube PC from its production lines, saying in news release that there is "a small chance" it will re-introduce an upgraded model in the future, but it has no plans to do so now.
The company first introduced the desktop Cube a year ago at the MacWorld trade show in New York, and debuted the newest version of the PC in February at the MacWorld trade show in Tokyo.
Mac fans picked more of the G4 minitower computers than the Cube, the company said, despite sharp price cuts for the Cube in January.

Mac graphics users and Web authors can shoehorn G4 power into a small space with a Cube, and can do it in style.
The power cord has a small but pleasing innovation: A single plug powers the Cube and speakers, and it can also feed one of the new Apple monitors and various add-on devices.
But the Cube deserves an 8-inch-square space on the desks of people who want a fast, modern Mac that’s a pleasure to use.

"Cube owners love their Cubes, but most customers decided to buy our powerful Power Mac G4 minitowers instead," said Philip Schiller, Apple vice president of worldwide product marketing, in a statement.
Apple unveiled the Cube almost a year ago at the MacWorld trade show, calling it "a supercomputer miraculously engineered into an eight-inch cube, suspended in a stunning crystal-clear enclosure." But sales of the Cube were far lower than what the company anticipated.
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company said they may release an upgraded model of the G4 Cube, but no plans are currently in the works.

Power Mac G4 Cube versus Mac mini shootout - The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)
Although I am the self-appointed leader of the Cult of Cube, I can objectively see how someone who is not so devoted to their Cube might simply replace it with a Mac mini.
The Mac mini will have some mod potential, but once it's dead, it won't be useful as much of anything other than maybe a large firewire drive enclosure, a mood box (if you light it right) or a kid's booster seat.
The cube has a larger cache, faster hard drive, and is easy to open up to change internal components, and also holds more ram.

 Macworld: Apple's 30th Anniversary - Power Mac G4 Cube
But six years after its debut—and five years after Apple pulled the plug—the Power Mac G4 Cube remains one of the company’s most memorable industrial designs.
The system packed a lot of power in a small space, delivering performance similar to the Power Mac G4 in an enclosure that business executives with a sense of style didn’t need to hide under their desks (especially when paired with Apple’s one-cable ADC-equipped flat panel displays).
Sadly, Apple misjudged the Cube’s appeal—lack of PCI expansion slots, allegations that the clear case had cracks in it, and oversensitive power buttons conspired to end the Power Mac G4 Cube’s run in 2001.

As for performance, the Cube performs...well, almost exactly like the G4 towers introduced in August 1999—over a year ago (to look at the updated dual-processor G4s, see p48).
It's not too expensive, it's got respectable power under the hood, and with its external monitor and easily upgraded components, the Cube is the perfect choice for someone who needs more than an iMac.
