PowerPC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
PowerPC is largely based on IBM's earlier POWER architecture, and retains a high level of compatibility with it; the architectures have remained close enough that the same programs and operating systems will run on both if some care is taken in preparation.
If the new POWER single-chip solution could be made bus-comparable at a hardware level with the 88000, that would allow both Apple and Motorola to bring machines to market much faster since they would not have to redesign their board architecture.
However, the original POWER architecture IBM developed and from which the PowerPC processor was originally derived was still very much alive on their server offerings for large businesses and continues to evolve to this day.

Howstuffworks "How PC Power Supplies Work"
In a personal computer (PC), the power supply is the metal box usually found in a corner of the case.
Power supplies, often referred to as "switching power supplies", use switcher technology to convert the AC input to lower DC voltages.
The power supply also has a circuit that supplies 5 volts, called VSB for "standby voltage" even when it is officially "off", so that the button will work.

PC Power Supply Failure Diagnostics - Computer ATX Power Supply Troubleshooting and Repair
A PC that boots on the second or third try is most likely suffering from a quick power_ok (or power_good) signal, coming on before the power supply has stabilized.
Common power supply problems unrelated to the boot process are noisy operation and unstable voltages, both of which are a reason to replace the supply.
As soon as the PC powers up, you should be able to hear the hard drive motor spin the drive (like a very, very, quiet jet taking off) and the read/write head seeking (a gentle clunking sound).

Intel Press - Building the Power-Efficient PC
Written by PC experts, this book provides developers and integrators with practical knowledge and design techniques for building PCs that address the increasing demand for energy conservation.
PC hardware developers, software programmers, and system integrators must work together to build systems that meet the new power management guielines.
Instead of rehashing specifications, Building the Power-Efficient PC clearly explains how a properly designed system functions during power state transitions and shows you in detail how those transitions can be implemented in the hardware and software.

 Power from PC
Well, your typical PC power supply is delivering about 200 Watts at its output, and is running at somewhere around 70-80% efficiency, which means that it needs to dissipate anywhere from 40 to 80 Watts internally.
PC power supplies usually have a minimum load requirement, which means that they won't regulate properly unless they're loaded to at least (typically) 20% of their maximum rating on the +5V output.
PC power supplies are readily available and inexpensive because they are mass products (any other power supply at same specs cost typically many times more).
