Associativity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This article is about associativity in mathematics, for associativity in central processor unit memory cache architecture, see CPU cache.
Associative operations are abundant in mathematics, and in fact most algebraic structures explicitly require their binary operations to be associative.
Power associativity and alternativity are weak forms of associativity.

In (Click link for more info and facts about abstract algebra) abstract algebra, power associativity is a weak form of (Click link for more info and facts about associativity) associativity.
(The process of raising a quantity to some assigned power) Exponentiation to the power of any (The number 1 and any other number obtained by adding 1 to it repeatedly) natural number other than (The quantity that registers a reading of zero on a scale) zero can be defined consistently whenever multiplication is power-associative.
Exponentiation to the power of zero can also be defined if the operation has an (An operator that leaves unchanged the element on which it operates) identity element, so the existence of identity elements becomes especially useful in power-associative contexts.

Here, 3 is the ''base'', 5 is the ''exponent'' (written as a superscript), and 243 is ''3 raised to the 5th power'' or ''3 raised to the power 5''.
The exponents 2 and 3 occur so commonly that there are short words for them: the powers are called the square and cube of the base, respectively.
A special syntax applies to the trigonometric_functions: a positive exponent applied to the function's abbreviation means that the result is raised to that power, while an exponent of -1 indicates the inverse function.

Power stroke   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
A power stroke is, in general, the stroke of a cyclic motor which generates force.
In muscles, the power stroke is the stage of muscle contraction when the cross-bridge (connecting the actin in the thin filament to the myosin in the thick filament) moves towards the H-zone, thus causing the muscle fiber to contract.
For example, this is used in canoeing to describe a powerful motion with a paddle.

 Power
The average power consumed by a two-terminal electrical device is a function of the root mean square values of the sinusoidal voltage across the terminals and the sinusoidal current passing through the device.
Because power operates both relationally and reciprocally, sociologists speak of the balance of power between parties to a relationship: all parties to all relationships have some power: the sociological examination of power concerns itself with discovering and describing the relative strengths: equal or unequal, stable or subject to periodic change.
Statistical power depends on the significance criterion, the size of the difference or the strength of the similarity (that is, the effect size) in the population, and the sensitivity of the data.

Exponentiation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Here, 3 is the base, 4 is the exponent (written as a superscript[?]), and 81 is 3 raised to the 4th power.
However, because we need only power associativity and not general associativity, the concept of exponentiation also makes sense in some other useful situations, such as the nonzero octonions.
So in particular, this law is satisfied in an Abelian group, such as the multiplicative group of elements from a given field that are distinct from zero.

Fast Cache and Bus Power Estimation for Parameterized System-on-a-Chip Design
We focus in this paper on parameters of the system cache and its associated on-chip buses, the CPU to cache bus, and the cache to main memory bus, as cache and bus have been shown to contribute to a significant percentage of system power.
Such simultaneous exploration was recently shown to be crucial to optimizing deep-submicron designs [7], in which bus power consumption begins to surpass that of cache, and in which the cache and bus parameters must therefore be carefully tuned to one another.
We have presented a technique for rapidly estimating the power and performance of the cache memory and bus sub-system of a system-on-a-chip.

Interface and Cache Power Exploration for Core-Based Embedded System Design
Minimizing power consumption is of paramount importance during the design of embedded (mobile computing) systems that come as systems-on-a-chip, since interdependencies of design characteristics like power, performance, and area for various system parts (cores) become increasingly influential.
The performance is obtained as an output of the ISS whereas the power consumption of the whole system results as the sum of the power consumptions of all involved cores.
The reason for this behavior is that the bus power is a significant component of total power in newer technologies, and bus power is inversely related to execution-time.

 Introduction
Switching power and short-circuit power are the dynamic components of the power consumption, whereas leakage power is the static component.
The main source of power consumption in a typical CMOS digital circuit is the switching power which roughly accounts for 80% of the total power consumption.
Furthermore since associativity cannot be applied to operations with multiple fanouts, CSR is applied first to remove this inhibiting factor by creating redundant operations.

If the block tag value DOES match the address tag value, then the associated 'lru_ count' entry should be set back to zero (a hit, a zero value indicates this block is the most- recently- used block in this cache line).

Memory Design for Low Power   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
We have determined that to reduce the power due to memory traffic, a multi-tiered approach has to be applied.
The procedure is comprehensive and consists of global transformations to increase the locality and regularity of data accesses, systematic method for data reuse, and memory allocation and assignment that meets the timing constraints with as cheap as possible memory architecture (both in terms of power and area).
Thus, in the design of low power systems, it is very important that the power cost due to memory be reduced as much as possible.

It is now well known that in systems that involve multidimensional streams of signals such as images or video sequences, the majority of the power cost is not due to the datapath or the controllers, but due to memory traffic.
In order to reduce the power due to memory traffic, a multi-tiered approach has to be applied.
We have demonstrated the importance of including energy in the performance metrics, since for different cache configurations, the variation in energy is quite different from the variation in the number of cycles.

Rather, we show that the required associativity is simply a function of the routing table size.
