  Power Consumption
Once the actual power consumption is known though, it is a simple task to convert to either of the others.
Power consumption can be derived both for individual appliances and for the household as a whole.
By taking regularly readings of the accumulated kWh and having some idea of when high consumption appliances like heaters, stoves and air-conditioners were operating, it should be possible to work out where a lot of the electricity consumed is going.

Power consumption - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In electrical engineering, power consumption refers to the electrical energy over time that must be supplied to an electrical appliance to maintain its operation.
The power consumption is usually a result of power used to perform the intended function of the device plus additional "wasted" power that is dissipated as heat and/or light.
Power consumption is usually measured in units of watts.

Electric appliance capable of saving power consumption - Patent 6636026
Although power to operate a built-in clock is included in the standby power consumption in addition to that of said parts, the most part is occupied by that of said parts.
Furthermore, since the power supply to each part of the clock section is stopped so far as the reservation function of the electric appliance is not interfered and the time adjustment is automatically made whenever it is required, the second power consumption is saved without sacrificing the function and operability of an electric appliance.

Semiconductor strategies for low power consumption
Another important feature in power control is for the microcontroller to have various operating modes that enable you to either manually or automatically shut down modules not in use.
Implementing power modes enables the software programmer to switch to low power consumption or standby power without taking care of each and every module individually, although there is certainly still the option to do so.
The current consumption of a CMOS transistor circuit, regardless of the technology, is much larger in the active, switching state.

Although useful for gross estimates, these methods are not acceptable for estimating the power consumed by a DSP in a complex system where the cores, peripherals and on-chip memory may be turned on and off independently according to changes in the applications and operating modes.
Once maximum and idle power figures are established for each of the on-chip functions, it is possible to create a power consumption curve for each by interpolation.
In handheld systems, low power consumption is usually a major requirement in order to extend battery operating time, but even line-powered systems need to keep heat dissipation and operating costs down by drawing less current.

 Power Consumption
Note that unlike most hard disk specifications, power consumption normally is higher for drives with more platters even within the same family--since they have more mass to move, more power is required to turn the platters.
This tells you that roughly 3/4 of the +12 V power is taken by the spindle motor and roughly 1/4 by the actuator assembly.
Power consumption is primarily affected by the design of the drive's spindle motor and the number and size of the spindle platters, and to a lesser extent, other components such as the actuator and controller board.

Linear power supplies, also referred to as “energy vampires” because of their energy-sucking nature, work off of old technology from the 1800’s, which hasn’t kept pace with current innovation.

The problem seems to have been that most mobos were designed so that their CPU power regulator was fed from +5V PSU and most PSU-s and mobos couldn’t take the wild power consumption changes happening on this +5V rail (check out the max power consumption of a Palomino and see the huge difference).
I have not measured this, it is mighty difficult to measure it without doing some serious excercises on a mobo using a soldering iron, because this power is drawn from a +3.3V rail among with all the other chips present on the motherboard.
