Apple PowerPC G5: 64-bit processing at speeds up to 2GHz
The design of the PowerPC G5 was derived from IBM's 64-bit POWER4 processor, whose highly parallel processing, two double-precision floating-point units and advanced branch prediction logic drive IBM's successful eBusiness servers.
Two Integer Units: The PowerPC G5 has two integer units capable of a broad range of simple and complex instructions involving both 32-bit or 64-bit calculations, and which take full advantage of the processor's 64-bit registers and data paths to complete 64-bit integer calculations in a single pass.
Complete: When operations on the data are complete, the PowerPC G5 recombines the instructions into the original groups of five and the load/store units store the data in cache or main memory for further processing.

In computing, the PowerPC 970, PowerPC 970FX, PowerPC 970GX, and PowerPC 970MP, also known as PowerPC G5, are 64-bit processors in the PowerPC family from IBM.
The PowerPC 970 is built using a 130 nm manufacturing process, and the PowerPC 970FX and 970MP are built using a 90 nm fabrication process.
The G5 ran at higher temperatures than older models meaning it could not be fitted into the Powerbook or the iBook.

PowerPC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
PowerPC was the cornerstone of AIM's PReP and Common Hardware Reference Platform initiatives in the 1990s, but the architecture found the most success in the personal computer market in Apple's Macintosh lines from 1994-2006.
PowerPC is largely based on IBM's earlier POWER architecture, and retains a high level of compatibility with it; the architectures have remained close enough that the same programs and operating systems will run on both if some care is taken in preparation.
IBM also had a full line of PowerPC based desktops built and ready to ship; unfortunately, the operating system which IBM had intended to run on these desktops—Microsoft Windows NT—was not complete by early 1993, when the machines were ready for marketing.

IBM's Tuesday, October 15th announcement of the PowerPC 970 was one of the most heavily anticipated processor announcements in recent memory.
Before word of the PowerPC 970 hit the 'net in the form of a seminar description on the Microprocessor Forum 2002's website, such customers were facing only one option: AMD's forthcoming Hammer series of x86-64 processors.
Apple, of course, is the obvious customer for the 970, and as I'll discuss in a moment IBM's newly announced chip would fit well with their general needs and direction.

The New Apple Core: IBM's PowerPC 970/G5
Besides moving from 32 to 64 bits, the G5 represents Apple's turning from longtime supplier Motorola to its other partner in the PowerPC trio, IBM -- the new CPU is actually the PowerPC 970 that IBM unveiled in October 2002.
To tame this beast for desktop duty, IBM removed one of the processor cores and the L3 controller and trimmed the Level 2 cache to 512K, accompanied by 96K of Level 1 cache (32K for data and 64K for instructions).
In addition to the native 64-bit mode, with the 42-bit real and 64-bit effective addresses mentioned earlier, the processor supports a native 32-bit mode, which clears the top half of all effective addresses and uses the first 16 entries of the segment look-aside buffer as on-chip segment registers, reducing the number of off-chip table accesses.
