PowerPC is largely based on IBM's earlier (but retroactively named) POWER architecture, and retains a high level of compatibility with it; the architectures have remained close enough that the same programs and operating systems will run on both if some care is taken in preparation.
They rewrote the essential pieces of their Mac OS operating system for the PowerPC architecture, and further wrote a 680x0 emulator which could run the remaining parts of the unrewritten OS and 68K based applications.
PowerPC processors bring the processor's local bus to the chip's surface, and connect to a bridge chip that translate this into other on-board device buses that attach to RAM, PCI, and other devices.

PowerPC Reference Platform   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
PowerPC Reference Platform (PReP) was a PowerPC hardware reference design.
The successor to CHRP, it was conceptualized as a design to allow various operating systems (especially Mac OS, Windows NT and various flavors of UNIX) to run on a common hardware platform.
It did not catch on, and the only systems to ship PReP hardware were certain members of IBM's RS/6000 series machines running AIX.

PowerPC 601: This was the first microprocessor to be delivered and was first used in an IBM RS/6000 workstation.
PowerPC 603: The PowerPC microprocessor for cost-sensitive portables and other low-power, low-cost systems, this is the least powerful member of the PowerPC family, and it consumes the least amount of electrical power.
All four of these PowerPC chips went through their development steps in parallel in order to bring the entire family to market more quickly than would be possible with a more traditional serial development approach.

In support of platforms which are not there needs to be a means for the platform to inform the OS which power on triggers it supports.
The platform may want to output indicators that we do not know of, the platform may have different triggers for resume than for normal power on, etc. So we are thinking of using hibernate with a null block list (first word, length in bytes, of the block list is 0).

Is it RIP for PowerPC spec? | CNET News.com
The PowerPC Reference Platform specification is in danger of drifting into obscurity as some of its most powerful original supporters practically ignore it and the next-generation version of the operating system for the Macintosh that would run on the platform is perennially delayed.
The PowerPC Platform specification, formerly known as the Common Hardware Reference Design, or CHRP, is intended to provide an open standard for a system design that would use the PowerPC chip and run multiple operating systems, including Apple's Mac OS and Microsoft's Windows NT.
Systems based on the PowerPC Platform Reference Design, the blueprint for the new architecture, were initially supposed to ship in the second half of 1996, including a PowerPC-compliant system from Apple and a system from IBM, which would also run the Mac OS.

If the PowerPC is to retain any credibility as an alternative to the x86, the alliance must deliver a steady stream of faster chips and a viable system standard that attracts big-volume vendors.
The PowerPC platform carries some baggage from both the existing PC architecture and the Mac because it's designed to work with industry standard PC components and Mac peripherals.
The PowerPC is the best-selling RISC architecture on the desktop, but almost all PowerPC systems are Power Macs, and Apple has less than 9 percent of the market.
