The Daily Vault Album Reviews : Powerslave
Powerslave is first noteworthy because it marked the first time in the band's recorded history that they kept the exact same line-up two albums in a row.
The remaining tracks on Powerslave have occasionally taken heat from the fans, and on first listen, one thinks that Iron Maiden took Dickinson's hobby of fencing a little too close to their hears with songs like "The Duelists" and "Flash Of The Blade".
Powerslave marked a special time in Iron Maiden's career: it was the album that set them on the path to becoming superstars, and quite possibly the spokespeople for heavy metal at that time.

Powerslave showed the band building on the epic style touched on in previous pieces like "To Tame a Land" from Piece of Mind and "Hallowed Be Thy Name" from The Number of the Beast.
Powerslave was quite the news when it was released, mainly because it contained a 13 minute piece on it!
It is another rather grand album in the vein of this one, but lacks some of the spark that is here on Powerslave.

Powerslave, however, is better than even the substantial achievements of Brave New World, Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son, Piece Of Mind, and Somewhere In Time.
The song (other than Powerslave) that caught my ear immediately was Flash of the Blade, simply an amazing sound all around, especially the vocals and the solo's.In fact the only song on here that i didnt think to be excellent is Back in the Village.
The album is actually genius, how they made metal the way it was in the 80's, with albums like this.

That said, the album is still very good, as Paul Di'Anno, in his last studio stint with the band, once again registers an impressive showing, earnestly screeching out song after song, while Adrian Smith replaces Dennis Stratton as the band’s second guitarist with no apparent loss of chemistry.
This is the album that began in earnest phase III of the Maiden experience, and I well remember my disappointment upon first hearing it.
This is their most Gothic album, a convoluted concept piece whose main weaknesses are the silly lyrics and the cruise control repetitiveness of some of the choruses.

The Daily Vault Album Reviews : Powerslave
Powerslave carries on the progressive metal trend that was emerging on Piece Of Mind, fueled by Harris' fascination with sci-fi and fantasy literature, mythology, military history and ancient civilizations.
Most metal bands of that period were stuck in a 3-chord rut, and there are few of their fellow headbangers that could touch them from a compositional standpoint.
Closing out this album are the 2 songs that lift Powerslave above the rest of their catalogue in my opinion.

Definitely not enough to bring the album to an essential status, not even really saving the album from sinking slowly into oblivion (lost in a metallic ocean of now-average and rather boring riffs, overflowed a tidal wave of such albums), this last track is worth a notice, but little more.
“Powerslave” soon became one of the landmarks in the heavy metal scene, and it still is. Every track is a winner here, something that is very rare for most albums, and I would say in overall that this is Iron Maiden’s best release this far.
Iron Maiden's first four albums are a document of the band's continuous upward drive to rock stardom, from the gritty clubs of Acacia Avenues to the pretensious nonsense of biblical narratives, culminating in a sold-out headlining tour of the US.

The most interesting thing to me about this album is that it sounds just like any other Iron Maiden album would (i.e., they have not compromised their sound in any way whatsoever), but yet it still remain fresh to the ear.

Powerslave is part of the IM holy trilogy for me, with the other two being part of the next discussion (more on those then).
My beef with Powerslave is that songs 4 to 6 seem like absolute, complete, total filler to me. I never got into Back in the Village or The Duellists, and the chorus of "Flash of the Blade" is just as cheesy as the "Invaders" chorus, but it doesn't work nearly as well.

This is what the "classic" line-up had in store on their second outing together: Take "The Trooper" and "To Tame a Land" from their previous album and expand and improve on these to get 'Powerslave'...
Even so, it is a fitting and effective choice for the intro to "Flash of the Blade" as Bruce sings the fantastic (or fantasy) tale of dragons and lore: "You'll die as you lived by the flash of the blade." Melodic and quite heavy.
Finally, we have the album's conclusion: the greatest Iron Maiden song 'er written, the benchmark of "epic", the pure and unadulterated meaning of life itself:

When Iron Maiden fans pick their favorite album, most settle on one of three from the band's heyday in the early 1980s: The Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, or Powerslave.
The other songs on Powerslave are about swordfighting (lead singer Bruce Dickinson is a fencer), a Ridley Scott movie called The Duellists (which in turn is based on Joseph Conrad's novel The Duel), and Egyptian mythology (hence the album cover's pharaonic motif).
The highlight of Powerslave, however, is its climactic final track, "Rime of the Ancient Mariner." Yes, it's inspired by the Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem of the same name.
