Anvil Press Poetry: E. Powys Mathers
Powys Mathers (1892-1939) is the not-quite-forgotten man of modern English poetry.
Tony Harrison is a confirmed Mathers fan and his preface brilliantly and entertainingly describes the puzzles of Mathers' life and the fascination and originality of his poetry.
As he concludes: "And Mathers, erotic aesthete, cocktail-shaking Chinese-American, honorary Arab nomad, bhang-chewer, Turkish bisexual, tormenting puzzle-setter, was a true if minor poet whose assimilation of Eastern modes should rank with Arthur Waley or Ezra Pound, and whose name and achievement should be much better known than they are.

 Edward Peter Mathers
This supremacy was won for The Observer first by the great Torquemada (Edward Powys Mathers) and then by his successors.
Mathers was born at Forest Hill in 1892, the only son of Edward Peter Mathers, the founder of the newspaper South Africa, and of Mary Powys, through whom he was related to the three Powys brothers, T. Llewelyn and John Cooper.
Even the verse in which he composed his puzzles was often quite distinguished: one of his solvers wrote to say that she had learned many of his rhyme puzzles off by heart.

Gay Tales of the Samurai by E. Powys Mathers, Henry M. Christman, Ihara Saikaku
Mathers translated these tales, not from Japanese, but from the French translation of Mardrus, and they appeared originally in a three-volume collection called Eastern Love (1930).
Mathers never used the word "gay", this is anachronistic and it is the publisher who created the title.
The men and boys of old Japan who had love affairs were not gay, not queer, but pederastic or pedophile.

The Book of Thousand Nights and One Night (4 volume set) by Edward Powys Mathers (Paperback Edition): Bookhills.com
The Mardrus version (in French) that Mathers rendered into English claimed to be an absolutely literal translation, but was nothing of the sort: it was a paraphrase which exaggerated and distorted certain elements in the original to make it appeal to the decadent taste of the France of Marcel Proust and André Gide.
Powys did a very good job in translating this dubious text, but was the job worth doing?
Despite the readability of his version and the elegance of his translations of the numerous poems contained in the text, the result cannot be preferred to the older version by Richard Burton or the recent one by Husain Haddawy.

The jewel in the cobra’s mouth by Eric Ormsby
It’s odd that Gombrich fails to mention the free version of this poem by E. Powys Mathers, republished in 2004 by Anvil Press in the collection Black Marigolds and Coloured Stars.
Powys Mathers claimed to have made the translation in the trenches during the Great War, but since he was a poet-charlatan of great ingenuity, often inventing both his exotic poets and his “translations,” this is doubtful.
Even so, his unrhymed version (which bears little relation to the original Sanskrit I can detect, beyond the refrain) is smoothly musical in a way that the more accurate Gombrich might have emulated.
