The history of Poznan University of Medical Sciences starts in 1919 when, a pharmaceutical department was created at the University of Poznań.
The first rector of Poznan University was Heliodor Święcicki and first Dean of the Faculty of Medicine was Professor Adam Wrzosek.
In 1940 an underground University of Western Poland was formed in Warsaw which comprised the Faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry and in 1941, the Polish School of Medicine at the University of Edinburgh was founded, of which the first Dean was surgeon Antoni Jurasz from the University of Poznań.

Poznan University, originally called Piast University was officially opened 7th May 1919.
It was also Poznan that boasted the first Clinics: of Parasitic and Tropical Diseases(1961), and of the Hand Surgery (1969), as well as the Department of Rehabilitation (1960), including (from 1968) rehabilitation of the suffering from occupational diseases, the Centre of Clinical Dietetics (1959) and others.
The head of he Medical University is the Rector, who, like deans of particular faculties, is elected for a three-year term of office by the Electoral College.

Although higher education in Poznan began as early as the 16th century it was not until May 1919 that the University of Poznañ was established.
In 1959 the Medical Faculty, including the Division of Dentistry and the Pharmaceutical Faculty, were detached from the main University and established as an independent unit called the Karol Marcinkowski University of Medical Sciences, named after a famous Poznañ physician of the early 19th century.

The Library of the University of Poznan possess an exceptional collection of Masonic books amounting to about 80,000 volumes.
This collection was originally formed during World War II when Heinrich Himmler's SS under the Nazi regime in Germany confiscated the libraries of Masonic libraries in Germany, and stored this archive in Poland.
Some of the items are housed in Poznan and others at the Chateau de Ciazen about 80 kilometers from Poznan.
