 | | The most common pozzolanic materials are volcanic ash (the original pozzolan), pumicite, opaline shales and cherts, calcined diatomaceous earth, burnt clay, fly ash, silica fume, slag, etc. Pulverized fuel ash is probably the most common artificial pozzolan. |
 | | In considering pozzolans in general, the silica component must be amorphous, because the reactivity of crystalline silica is low. |
 | | Pozzolans are often cheaper than the portland cement that they replace, but their main advantage lies in their slow hydration and, therefore, low rate of heat development, a important factor in mass construction, where portland—pozzolan cement or a partial replacement of portland cement by pozzolan is mostly applied. |
