The PPB hired Braaten in the summer of 1990, a few months before Potter took office as Chief, and she took her mandate from the transition plan, which described a program of public education and internal education about community policing.
But the core way the PPB has hoped to benefit from the Forum is the generation of legitimacy: By incorporating independent community input into its highest-level policy decisions, and simply by opening up decisionmaking to public eyes, the Bureau has tried to improve its image in the public eye.

On January 22, the final rule, which set the standard at 10 ppb, was published in the Federal Register with a general effective date of March 23, 2001; public water systems were given until 2006 to meet the new standard.
In setting the standard at 10 ppb in the final rule, EPA stated that, as part of the 6-year review process, it would evaluate new data to determine if the newly promulgated standard should be revised further (66 FR 7027).
In the final rule, EPA estimated that, with a 10 ppb standard, the annual number of bladder and lung cancer deaths avoided ranges from 21 to 30.

Atrazine-treated males (0.1 and 25 ppb) were sexually differentiated at metamorphosis as well, but 36% and 12% of the males treated with 0.1 and 25 ppb atrazine, respectively, suffered from gonadal dysgenesis--under-developed testes with poorly structured, closed lobules (or no lobules at all) and low to absent germ cells (Figure 4).
Furthermore, atrazine levels varied from 15.2 ppb to 0.8 ppb over a 24-hour period (July 22-23, 2001, respectively) as a result of evaporation followed by an increase in the water level from irrigation and runoff.
This morphology was similar to that displayed by 36% of the animals exposed to 0.1 ppb atrazine in the laboratory.

Earlier this year, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a ruling that called for maximum allowable arsenic levels to be lowered from 50 parts per billion (ppb) to 10 ppb in an effort to cut the health risks associated with the contaminant.
This study could not have come at a better time, as the US Environmental Protection Agency is now saying that it will do away with recently imposed reductions in the amount of arsenic allowed in the drinking water.
The upper limit had been 50 ppb (parts per billion) for over 50 years, but scientists have been calling for a reduction of that level for a long time.
