  Encyclopedia: Anton Praetorius
Praetorius was so impressed by the Great Wine Barrel in the Heidelberg Castle that he published a poem with the title "Vas Heidelbergense" in October 1595, praising its size as an apparent proof of the superiority of the Calvinist faith.
Praetorius was one of the first to describe the terrible situation of the prisoners and to protest against torture.

Michael Praetorius is this man, not only pillar of Lutheran music over the turning of the 17th century, but also a solid and traceable link in a chain that runs from Isaac to Brahms, spanning four centuries.
Praetorius and Schulteis carry the same connotation of a leader, and thus his name change was really no change at all.
It is strange beyond all reconning that Praetorius is best known today for his Terpsichore, a collection of over 300 french dance tunes that he arranged.

Sleeve Notes - Praetorius: Music from Terpischore
Michael Praetorius was born on 15 February 1571 at Creuzberg an der Werra near Eisenach, the son of a Lutheran pastor.
However, Praetorius makes it clear in the preface to Terpsichore that the collection was 'written for the French dancers by generally very good Geigers (known in their language as Violons) or lutenists', and that 'they play these same dances on the violin or lute'.
As already mentioned, Praetorius specifies the violin and the lute as the instruments used in France for courtly dance music; the lute ensemble music published by Nicolas Vallet in 1615 and by Jean-Baptiste Besard in 1617 offered us obvious models for intabulating the four-part writing in Terpsichore for lutes.

Praetorius states in chapter 19 of his "Syntagma Musicum" that this small bagpipe was a bellow-blown bagpipe from France.
This instrument, which consists of a bellow, a shuttle-drone, a single chanter and a leather bag which is not covered by any material, is treated separately from other normal bagpipes in Praetorius's book.
This is similar to the descriptions given by Praetorius and Mersenne except that Borjon shows a very developed system for the "grand-chalumeau" and also an additional "petit-chalumeau" (smaller chanter); both are covered with many keys.

In the context of languages and their structure, that little warning means a researcher - - a student, in other words - - should accept what the native-speakers say as having more validity than the theoretical statements of one who was raised outside the culture.
Historically, the "Praetorius organ" lies between the instrument described by Schlick in 1511 and the great "Werkprinzip" organs of the late seventeenth century.

Born in Creuzburg (Thuringia), Michael Praetorius was raised in Torgau, a small town famous for its Lutheran school.
During the next 7 years Praetorius had no fixed post but was employed intermittently by several north German courts (Magdeburg, Kassel, Halle, Dresden) as musical consultant and director of musical festivities.
As a pendant to his music, and in part to explain its performance, Praetorius wrote a three-volume treatise, Syntagma musicum (1615-1620), which deals with three subjects: the history of ancient sacred and secular music, the nature and construction of musical instruments, and the performance practices of his time.

The first movement was introduced by the 8' subcontra bass followed by the other "low choir" instruments; subsequent movements employed recorders using breathy and percussive unpitched sounds as well as vocalizations to underlay the melodic currents.
The sense of coloration usually provided by a number of "loud" instruments was inbued here by juxtaposing C basses, contra and subcontra bass against hig choir (garklein to tenor), and by use of contrasting articulations.
Three soprano recorders played stunningly in tune over the harp, with layers of sound from lower and higher register instruments phased in as the music accelerated, to illustrate the movement of the ocean.
