The tinder that lit the fire was a series of economic downturns and crop failures that left many of the poor starving.
The result was a wave of revolution sweeping across Europe and raising hopes of liberal reform as far away as Brazil, where the rhetoric surrounding the Praieira revolt took many cues from European events, as did its thorough repression.
Only the United Kingdom and Russia were missing: Russia had not yet a real bourgeois or proletarian class to initiate a revolution.

The Dutch legacy is still recognizable in Pernambuco's people, accent, and architecture.
Pernambuco was the site of the brief liberal Praieira revolt in 1848, which was Brazil's response to the European year of failed liberal revoltions.
The military officer who put it down was Deodoro da Fonseca, later briefly the first president of the Brazilian republic.

Their animosity in town and provincial government preceded the Praieira revolt and would survive the collapse of the Praieira movement.
But the heightened tensions caused by the rebellion (the Santos Leal faction supported the Praieriros who were opposed by Trajano Chacon’s Conservative allies) would bring sinister consequences to both families.
When loyal government troops quashed the revolt, members of Santos family suffered not only a defeat and prison terms but also the humiliation of losing to the Conservative faction.

The main problem here is lack of reliable data, cause our 1st census is from 1872, but the POP distribution is clearly wrong, as example Paradox gave us "portuguese, catholic, slaves", why in hell, Portugal would send catholic citizens as slaves to Brazil.
And yes, since several events regarding south american countries are closely tied to events on other south american countries (like the War of Paraguay), better having this thread to discuss all of South America than one only of Brazil.
I already have the flags of the two revolters, a huge timeframe with events, some leaders, some ship names, flavor events.

 Deodoro da Fonseca Summary
Pressed by militants to lead a coup and proclaim a republic, Deodoro believed that the military's honor could be maintained by merely overthrowing the ministry.
Even during the actual coup, led by Floriano Peixoto on Nov. 15, 1889, when Deodoro became ill, he seems to have thought it was simply a move against an antagonistic ministry.
Peixoto effectively crushed a revolt to restore Deodoro in January 1892, but by then Deodoro was suffering serious physical and mental decline.
