The county lies on a spread of level land between the lower White and Arkansas rivers that is known at the Grand Prairie as early at 1819.

The Prairie Five board governs the agency and applies to various federal and state organizations and foundations to obtain funding and grants to meet the needs as determined by local communities.
In July, 1975 the counties of Big Stone and Swift were added to the service delivery area and the name of the agency changed to Prairie Five Community Action Council, Inc. We currently have one office in each of the counties of our service delivery area.

Boulder's prairie dog hotel is closing at the end of the month, leaving the area's best-known prairie dog rescuer scrambling to find a place to keep the animals during relocation.
Acquiring land to relocate prairie dogs is the biggest hurdle in a formal proposal of alternatives to poisoning the animals on Boulder Valley School District property.

 Biking McHenry County's Prairie Trail
A three mile mountain bike trail runs the perimeter of the 120 acre Sterne's Woods and four more miles of mountain bike trails are available in the adjacent 150 acres of Veteran Acres Park.
The Prairie Trail is run by the McHenry County Conservation District and connects the communities of Algonquin, Lake in the Hills, Crystal Lake, Prairie Grove, McHenry, McCullom Lake, Ringwood, and Richmond.
In 1987, the tracks were removed from the old Chicago and North Western RR, allowing for the south end of the Prairie Trail's creation, and as seen here, the trail's northern segment runs along active tracks, making this trail one of only a few which follows both an old right-of-way and an existing one.
