The Prairie Island Indian Community in the State of Minnesota, also known as the Prairie Island Mdewakanton Dakota Community, is located on the Prairie Island Indian Reservation, which is on an island in the Mississippi River some 14 miles north of Red Wing and 30 miles southeast of St. Paul.
Prairie Island members are descendants of Mdewakanton and Wahpekute Bands of Eastern Dakota also known as the Mississippi or Minnesota Sioux, who were parties to treaties with the United States from 1805 to 1863.
The Prairie Island Indian Community is a federally recognized Indian Tribe organized under the Indian Reorganization Act, and is governed under the terms of the Prairie Island Community Constitution and By-Laws adopted by Tribal members on May 23, 1936 and approved by the Secretary of the Interior on June 20, 1936.

Although the Prairie Island Indian Community is opposed to additional nuclear waste storage at Prairie Island, the tribe has been willing to sit down with Xcel and the state to discuss possible solutions that would address the tribe's health and safety needs, and allow the plant to continue operating.

Prairie du Chien’s recorded history was ushered in June 17, 1673 when Marquette and Jolliet came down the Wisconsin River and were the first Europeans to see the Mississippi River.
Feriole Island The island is the site of the city’s earliest activities, the center of the fur trade, home of the first Fort Crawford, site of the Battle of Prairie du Chien in 1814 and three important Indian treaties.
In 1903 the Prairie du Chien Sanitarium was erected.

The House Thursday (May 15) rejected Prairie Island legislation that placed future licensing decisions on Minnesota's two nuclear power plants in the hands of the Public Utilities Commission (PUC).
Both the House and Senate bills allow additional cask storage at Prairie Island until the end of the plantâs current license for its two nuclear plants in 2013 and 2014.
But the House Prairie Island bill also differed from the Senate bill, which places final decision making on future nuclear waste cask storage in the hands of the Legislature.

The Mdewkanton Dakota Prairie Island Tribe and environmental groups opposed to the storage facility appealed the PUC decision to the Minnesota Court of Appeals.
