Prairie du Chien’s recorded history was ushered in June 17, 1673 when Marquette and Jolliet came down the Wisconsin River and were the first Europeans to see the Mississippi River.
Prairie du Chien was neutral territory; conflicting tribes laid down their arms before attending the rendezvous.
In 1903 the Prairie du Chien Sanitarium was erected.

It was agreed that the current Prairie du Chien Police Department Dispatch Center would be the location of the joint dispatch center and that a wall will have to be taken out so that the room can be expanded.
According to Bob Gummer of PDC Midwest, the study, encompassing an area within a 60-mile radius of Prairie du Chien, showed that although the area population was not expected to grow rapidly, the senior population would increase dramatically, and the demand for senior care facilities would exceed the existing capacity in the community.

The Wisconsin Welcome Center-Prairie du Chien is staffed from April to November by Department of Tourism travel counselors, and is staffed by the local Chamber of Commerce officials weekdays during the off-season.

Aird married Grey Cloud Woman, a daughter of the Mdewakanton chief Wabasha, and their daughter, Margaret (also called Grey Cloud), was born about 1793.
