Karat, whose tough line on the party not accepting the prime ministership when it was offered to Basu in 1996 to head a United Front government earned him the sobriquet of hardliner, said in his speech immediately after the election that the party would fight the twin challenge of communalism and the neo-liberal economic policies.
Karat and Yechury were hand-picked by the party leadership in the mid-1980s to be groomed as the next generation leaders.
In 1985, Karat was elected the secretary of the Delhi state committee and was inducted in the Politburo along with Yechury in 1992.

There was a loud buzz that Prakash — the “hardliner” in the CPM — would not be hard on the UPA government and reforms.

Hardliner Prakash Karat may be gearing up for the CPI(M)’s top job, but the party’s relation with the UPA is not likely to see any radical shift.
Karat’s leadership may not change the CPI(M) — but it may transform the man. Already, the sources point out, Karat — known as Sudhir when he was underground during the Emergency — is more forthcoming than before.
Though Karat was elected to the party central committee in 1985 and has been a member of the Polit Bureau since 1992, it was Yechuri, given the role of interacting with the outside world, who had the more visible face.
