Samkhya - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Its philosophy regards the universe as consisting of two eternal realities: purusha and prakrti ; it is therefore a strongly dualist and enumerationist philosophy, characterized by a worldview that sees the universe as an evolving mixture of distinct dualities (light/dark, male/female, etc).
They are the silent spectators of prakrti (matter or nature), which is composed of three gunas (dispositions): satva, rajas and tamas (steadiness, activity and dullness).
This disturbance is due to the proximity of Purusha and prakrti.

Amazon.ca: Books: Prakrti in Samkhya-Yoga: Material Principle, Religious Experience, Ethical Implications   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Prakrti is one of the central metaphysical principles in the religious traditions of Hinduism, especially in the very influential Samkhya and Yoga traditions.
Prakrti in the Samkhya and Yoga systems is the ultimate material principle and thus the substratum (dharmin) from which manifest, in the presence of the self (purusa), the gross and subtle bodies including the mental organs of all living beings from the leaf of grass to the powerful gods.
This book investigates a religious experience called 'merging with prakrti' (prakrtilaya), which has been neglected in previous studies, but is described in the Samkhya and Yoga texts and constitutes an important aspect of the religious understanding of the material principle.

Prakrti or Operative Principle, not being all-pervading, is sheltered in Purusa.
It is now abundantly clear that even though Prakrti is free to make honest use of her acquired power, the attainment or non-attainment of this power depends on Purusa or Citi-Shakti (Consciousness) and so we have to say, Prakrti is but the characteristic of Purusa Himself--Shakti sa shivasya shaktih.
And so the fact of Prakrti being the causal entity of the stream of action and thought will be recognised only when She completely identifies herself with objectivity.

Prakrti affects the metamorphosis of Purus'a into form through the agency of the three gun'as - or binding principles, or operative forces - of which she is composed.
Within Sagun'a Brahma, Prakrti is continuously creating forms from the field of consciousness which has come within the sphere of her influence due to having been encompassed within a triangular matrix of the gun'as, or within the progenitrix of Creation.
Due to the continued clash and cohesion in the tension between Prakrti and Purus'a in prati-saincara, a portion of physical substance is subtlified beyond the five fundamental factors to become ectoplasm, or mind-stuff.

Although for the Samkhyas prakrti undergoes real transformations, the primary problem is epistemological, that is, how one comes to know things, rather than ontological, or rooted in the nature of things themselves.

The most significant difference is that the Yoga school not only incorporates the concept of Ishvara (a personal God) into its metaphysical worldview, which the Samkhya does not, but also upholds Ishvara as the ideal upon which to meditate.
This is because Ishvara is the only purusha that has never become entangled with prakrti.
The Yoga system lays down elaborate prescriptions for gradually gaining physical and mental control and mastery over the personal self, until one's consciousness has intensified sufficiently to allow awareness of one's real Self (as distinct from one's feelings, thoughts and actions).
