Staten Island is one of the five boroughs of New York City, located on an island of the same name on the west side of the Narrows at the entrance of New York Harbor.
Indeed, much of the central and southern sections of the island was once dominated by farms, primarily dairy and poultry farms, some of which were still in existence as recently as the early 1960s.
Staten Island is separated from Long Island by the Narrows and from mainland New Jersey by the Arthur Kill and the Kill Van Kull.

The bedrock of the island is a diabase sill formed during the volcanic eruptions that created much of the bedrock of northern New Jersey, including the New Jersey Palisades, approximately 200 million years ago.
The island was probably abandoned later, possibly because of the extinction of large mammals on the island.

After a number of herons were seen on the island, further studies revealed that several species of birds, including egrets and ibis, were breeding in the area.
Along with Shooters Island and the Isle of Meadows, Prall’s Island is part of the Harbor Heron’s Wildlife Refuge.

The contiguous Staten Island area is bounded by the Kill van Kull and Newark Bay on the north, by Fresh Kills and Isle of Meadows on the south, and by several road systems on Staten Island on the east.
