Lisa Prato - Lowell Observatory Research Staff
Prato's studies of young visual binaries reveal the stellar properties and the characteristics of the planet-forming circumstellar disks around the individual stars.
Currently, Prato's primary focus is on spectroscopic binaries and the measurement of stellar velocities in these extremely small separation -- a few stellar radii to a few AU -- pairs.
By measuring the velocity ratio with respect to the center of mass of the system, it is possible to determine the mass ratio, ultimately necessary for the individual mass determination, and an important quantity in its own right for understanding binary star origins.
