Prayer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Prayer is an effort to communicate with God, or to some deity or deities, or another form of spiritual entity, or otherwise, either to offer praise, to make a request, or simply to express one's thoughts and emotions.
Often, there are prayers to fit specific occasions, such as the blessing of a meal, the birth or death of a loved one, other significant events in the life of a believer, or days of the year that have special religious significance.
This is the primary approach to prayer found in the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, most of the Church writings, and in rabbinic literature such as the Talmud.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: New Testament
In St. Paul (1 Corinthians 11:25) Jesus Christ uses the words "new testament" as meaning the alliance established by Himself between God and the world, and this is called "new" as opposed to that of which Moses was the mediator.
Later on, the name of testament was given to the collection of sacred texts containing the history and the doctrine of the two alliances; here again and for the same reason we meet the distinction between the Old and New Testaments.
The New Testament, as usually received in the Christian Churches, is made up of twenty-seven different books attributed to eight different authors, six of whom are numbered among the Apostles (Matthew, John, Paul, James, Peter, Jude) and two among their immediate disciples (Mark, Luke).

Prayer begins with a human cry "out of the depths"; the dialogue continues with God's response in an "oracle of salvation" (the announcement that God has heard the prayer and promises to be present and to help) and finally ascends to praise of God expressed in songs of thanksgiving.
Miller traces affinities between biblical prayer and the prayers of Israel's neighbors in ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, and elsewhere, showing that the particularity of biblical prayer is rooted in the universality of human experience.
Therefore, prayer can actually "persuade" God or even "change God's mind." The paradox of divine sovereignty and human freedom is treated profoundly in the discussion of intercessory prayers, which, in the Old Testament, are usually devoted to averting the wrath of God and, hence, removing impending punishment for sin.

However, Christian prayer is more than just telling God your list of requests and expecting him to answer your prayers like he's some kind of cosmic vending machine.
Christian prayer in the New Testament becomes more focused on the spiritual needs of individuals, such as the cleansing of sins, physical healing, and equipping of individuals with spiritual qualities to live like Christ.
Prayer in the New Testament is also quite intimate and even goes so far as to tell you to call God your Daddy.
