The Lower Esopus Creek flows from the upper basin of the Ashokan Reservoir at the great dam in the town of Olive through the flats between the foothills of the Catskill Mountains and the northern tip of the Shawangunk Mountains.
In 1907, the Ashokan Reservoir was built to meet the demand for potable water in New York City.

South of the Ashokan Pillar, there is the famous sacred pool- ‘Puskarni’ believed to be the same sacred pool in which Maya Devi took a holy dip just before giving birth to the Lord and also where infant Buddha was given his first purification bath.
In adition to Ashokan Pillar, the other Shrine of importance is the bas-relief image of Maya Devi, Enshrined in a small pagoda-like structure, the image shows MayaDevi, mother of the Lord.
On the western Bank of the tank there are two broken pieces of the Ashokan pillar, the longer one laying flat and the shorter ones stack into the ground.

The twelve villages once located beneath the Ashokan Reservoir are: Boiceville, Glenford, Olive Branch, Olive Bridge, Olive, Shokan, West Hurley, and West Shokan, which were relocated, and Olive City, Brown's Station, Brodhead's Bridge, and Ashton, which were destroyed and not rebuilt.
The village of Olive was relocated across the present-day reservoir and renamed Ashokan.
Ten years after construction began, the Ashokan Reservoir and the Catskill Aqueduct were completed.

The facilities at Ashokan, which include an administration building and a number of bunkhouses, are outdated and sorely in need of renovation - the cost of which is estimated to be between $1 and $2 million.
This deal, if successful, would allow for the staff at Ashokan to maintain their jobs and for the college to maintain its current programming use for educational purposes - this is potentially the best outcome.
The Board and myself have had a difficult time coming to this decision, however, in light of the ongoing aforementioned obstacles; we feel that this is the best outcome for the college.
