Pre-Code - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pre-Code films were created before the Motion Picture Production Code or Hays Code was put into effect in mid-1934.
The Code did not begin to weaken until the mid-50s, particularly in 1959 and 1960 after such increasingly explicit films as Anatomy of a Murder, Psycho and The Dark at the Top of the Stairs, which dealt with subjects and sexual matters that had been dormant in Hollywood, but not on Broadway, for decades.
Although an existing code of conduct for the film industry came into being in 1930, many ignored it and was not enforced very ethusiastically.

Production Code - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
At the forefront of challenges to the code was director Otto Preminger, whose films violated the code repeatedly in the 1950s.
The period between 1930 and 1934 is often referred to as the 'Pre-Code' era because, even though the Code existed, studios mostly ignored it.
The Code was further fortified by the creation of the Catholic Legion of Decency, which designated "indecent" films that Catholics should boycott.

 Pre-Printed Bar Code Labels
Whether it is nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows an on-site, out of spec bar code printer can cause, or to take arms against a sea of labeling troubles by rely on the resources of pre-printed bar code label service companies.
Since the data coded in the film master bar code is fixed, This system cannot produce sequences of bar coded serial numbers, or bar coded variable, customer supplied data.
If the primary considerations are: (1) overall quality of the bar code image; (2) high density messages; or (3) flexibility in label size and construction to meet special application requirements, then the photographic process may be particularly suitable.

 Pre-Code Delights Part I
That period while the code existed, but before it was enforced lasted from the popular acceptance of talkies in 1929 through the first half of 1934.
When it became obvious that the code was not being followed, there was another outcry by those same morally outraged groups and it was finally strictly enforced.
Simply put, the code was a set of moral rules that Hollywood studios used to censor movies so that they could avoid the intervention of the government.

 Pre-Code Hollywood
The Code itself recognized the two levels of comprehension: "Maturer minds may easily understand and accept without harm subject matter in plots which does younger people positive harm." Provided the children were quarantined and the meaning was elliptical, the Code permitted the possibility of a cinematically inspired thought crime.
Lending the Code moral authority and widespread acceptance was the composition of Hollywood's audience, conceived to be a great undifferentiated Public comprised of all ages, classes, and moral sensibilities.
Under the Code, so explicit a mental image—that is, an image not even depicted on screen but merely planted in the spectator's mind—would be too arousing to summon up.

 PRE - Preformatted Text
PRE is useful for formatting computer code or poetry where whitespace is important, but since preformatted text is inherently visual, authors should avoid dependence on it wherever possible.
The code in the preceding example would be more difficult to read if it were not preformatted, and so
PRE, authors should avoid altering the element's fixed-pitch font or non-collapsing whitespace properties by means of style sheets.

Indeed, the difference between pre-Codes and films made during the Code is so dramatic that, once one becomes familiar with pre-Codes, it becomes possible to tell, sometimes within five minutes, whether a 1934 film was released early or late in the year.
The term "pre-Code," though a convenient shorthand, is in a sense a misnomer: For the entire pre-Code era, a Production Code did, in fact, exist.

Under pressure from church and state decency groups, a code with enforcement powers was implemented in 1934.
For nearly four years, the movie capital had alternately mouthed and ignored the provisions of the 1930 code, particularly its list of "Don'ts and Be Carefuls": VD, ridiculing religion, seduction, rape, depictions of theft or murder, gruesomeness, men and women in bed together, surgery, drugs, miscegenation and nudity.
Created before the censorship Production Code (also knows as Hays Code) that was instituted in 1934 and was in effect for about 30 years (abolished in 1968).

In either case, the W3C seems to suggest the use of PRE tags for poetry, because a little later in the specification there is a W3C example of a poem (from To a Skylark) that is wrapped in PRE tags.
My vote is for <pre>: In a poem it’s of importance both that existing whitespace is preserved, and that no extra whitespace is inserted.
Some poems are presented as figures in which case you really need the PRE element to represent the same message of the original in a semantic way.

Something Old, Nothing New: A Code and Two Pair of Plans
But arguments over what kind of effect the Code was having, and whether it was a bad idea to enforce it, seem to be bigger nowadays, especially with all the nostalgia for the "Pre-Code" era.
At that point the Code was no longer needed, and it accordingly started to crumble away, collapsing entirely by the mid-'60s, by which time nobody assumed that you could sell anything, even a movie, to the entire country.
So the increasing technical finesse of movies in the mid-'30s is, in a way, part of the same process that led to the enforcement of the Code: the process of making movies that would be fun for absolutely everyone.

This was a pivotal event in cultural history, since the Hays Code endured until 1968, arguably depriving generations of moviegoers of a wide range of ideas and images and in some cases, coherent works of art.
Cultural phenomena like the Code are invariably more than the sum of their parts, but some of these parts could be powerful indeed.
According to Vieira, Howard Hughes was one of the few to openly challenge the Code.

More Sinned Against than Sinning: The Fabrications of "Pre-Code Cinema"
As the Code's first administrator, Jason Joy, explained, studios had to develop a system of representational conventions “from which conclusions might be drawn by the sophisticated mind, but which would mean nothing to the unsophisticated and inexperienced”.
In complete contradiction to the mythology of the Code not functioning during the early 1930s, its records reveal that this period actually saw by far the most interesting negotiations between the studios and the Code administrators over the nature of movie content, as the Code was implemented with increasing efficiency and strictness after 1930.
The Code's other principle permitted producers to deny responsibility for a movie's content, through a particular kind of ambiguity, a textual indeterminacy that shifted the responsibility for determining what the movie's content was away from the producer to the individual spectator.

UCLA Film & Television Archive - Collections - The Pre-Code Era
The code began to be strictly enforced in 1934 when all films were required to have certificates of approval issued by the Production Code Administration.
The Code was a self-regulatory measure which outlined specific dos and don'ts concerning what should appear on American movie screens.
Many motion picture historians have argued that Hollywood sound films produced prior to enforcement of the Code were not only more provocative but also offered more diversity than those produced while the Code was in place (1934-1966).

In effect, a film could not be profitably released without the Production Code seal as theater circuits were controlled by members of the Motion Picture Association.

That's why most of the smarts in my CSS are in the CODE block, and it just relies on the PRE block for the whitespace management under IE5, and the blocking so the background color fills the rectangle around the code.

Doherty's book is strongest when it is discussing individual films and weakest in its failure to adequately connect the films to the ongoing historical debate over the category of pre-Code cinema.
In the very conception of his book and its subject, Doherty examines pre-Code cinema to a large degree by its traditional terms.
The biggest problem with Pre-Code Hollywood is that Doherty fails to engage with any of the other scholarship regarding the Production Code or pre-Code cinema.
