 AardvarkArticles.net - History - History Of Colombia
Soon after that, in May 2002, the former liberal politician of conservative leanings Álvaro Uribe Vélez, whose father had been killed by left-wing guerrillas, was sworn in as Colombian president.
Although the system established by the Sitges agreement was phased out by 1978, the 1886 Colombian constitution--in effect until 1991--required that the losing political party be given adequate and equitable participation in the government which, according to many observers and later analysis, eventually resulted in some increase in corruption and legal relaxation.
While early initiatives in the Colombian peace process gave reason for optimism, the Pastrana administration also has had to combat high unemployment and other economic problems, such as the fiscal deficit and the impact of global financial instability on Colombia.

In San Agustín, enclosed in the Colombian Massif where the Andes divide into two branches and the Cauca and Magdalena rivers have their sources, imposing statues of volcanic stone recall the great days of a culture which vanished some eight centuries before the Spanish arrived.
Between Tierradentro, Popayán and Puracé, in the upper Cauca valley, traces have been found of a little-known group which produced complex pendants of gold and tumbaga in the form of birds or frogs, combined with human features.

Third gender, tropes of sexuality and transculturation in colonial Andean historiography.
The recovery and reconstruction pre-Hispanic and colonial subjectivities is challenged by the opacity of the tropes that represent them; therefore, the reader of colonial discourse must at once interrogate and trust these tropes if knowledge of pre-Colombian and colonial realities is to be obtained.
This dissertation explores how figures of colonial discourse can provide today's readers with access to knowledge of those pre-Colombian subjects transculturated through the discursive citations that produced them in the first place.
Chapter four focuses on the transculturation of these recovered notions of indigenous gender and sexual culture in colonial visita reports, ordenanzas, and the writings of Viceroy Toledo's official chronicler, Sarmiento de Gamboa, to demonstrate how indigenous same-sex sexuality became a regulatable category and grounds for a retroactive justification of conquest.

Saving the Sagebrush Steppe from Our Footprints
The delicate structure of the pre-Colombian sagebrush steppe ecosystems, characterized by a complex composition of grasses, forbs and shrubs, was the result of a highly variable semiarid climate and long fire-free periods.
More frequent fires, conversion of sagebrush steppe for agriculture, conversion to wheatgrass and ryegrass pasture and the rapid spread of introduced grasses and other non-native species have virtually eliminated pristine pre-Colombian sagebrush steppe habitat.
Over the last 130 years the sagebrush steppe ecosystem of western North America has been so radically altered and the changes are now so widespread that many believe that perhaps only 25 percent of the original 270 million acres can recover to a state resembling its original condition.
