Gamasutra - Features - "GDC 2003: How to Build a Better Cutscene"
Prerendered cutscenes are little movies, and they exist as individual frames that are created outside of the game engine.
If your cutscene is prerendered and the set is being designed and built specifically for the cutscene, then it makes sense to create a mockup set first.
With prerendered cutscenes, the only things that keep you from creating film quality animation are your budget, and the skill of your artists.

Prerendered User Interfaces for Higher-Assurance Electronic Voting | EECS at UC Berkeley
We propose an election system architecture in which the voting user interface is prerendered and published before election day.
The prerendered user interface is a verifiable artifact -- an electronic sample ballot -- enabling public participation in the review, verification, usability testing, and accessibility testing of the ballot.
Preparing the user interface outside of the voting machine dramatically reduces the amount and difficulty of software verification required to assure the correctness of the election result.

RPGamer Editorials - Are recent SquareSoft RPGs really games?
Prerendered graphics are done on a supercomputer before being compressed into a format the PlayStation can read and play back.
Prerendered stuff takes a lot of space, so that's why Square opted to use the CD format.
Besides, prerendered graphics are not very interactive, and 3D characters look really goofy walking on 2D backdrops (FFVII, Parasite Eve).

 Koudelka - GameCritics.com
It sported impressive CG graphics, rich prerendered backgrounds and was made by a collection of developers who once worked at Squaresoft -- all the things needed to garner some attention and positive early reviews.
The prerendered backgrounds may be amazing to look at, but traveling in them is an amazing endeavor.
I could be in a room and simply pass by objects because they looked to be part of the scenery and this only lead to more pointless backtracking.

Prerendered User Interfaces for Higher-Assurance Electronic Voting
The key idea we propose is to construct and verify a prerendered description of the UI before the election.
The ballot definitions we propose contain not just the prerendered images but a complete description of the user interface—the locations where the images will appear, the transitions from screen to screen, how these transitions are triggered, and so on.
Prerendering the UI is not incompatible with a further partitioning of the user interface into two steps as suggested by the frog voting architecture.

Prerendered stream: The 3D scene is entirely rendered to pixels during design, then it is put in a sequential animation format, such as QuickTime, GIF animation or page flipping.
These three approaches, prerendered streams, 2D animation of prerendered sprites, and full 3D rendering, take increasing amounts of processing power.
Prerendered pixel streams usually perform better in the Shockwave Player than in the Macromedia Flash Player.

If the prerendered graphics were actually in the game, like in a cutscene, then it should be ok. If it was made exclusively for the ads, then I can see why the ads got banned.
Yea, all the graphics displayed were prerendered of gameplay, nothing that actually happens in the game.
Thats why games always look so good in the comercials, the prerendering, but usually youll see the movies of the commercial scenes in teh game.

XO Forum - See Real PS3 Graphics, Not Some Tech Demo crap
Another thing that makes me think it's all prerendered is the introduction like a movie, and the slo-mo at the end.
May 17th, 2005 07:36 PM I agree that the beginning and ending are pre-rendered, but as I said before, I believe they are seamlessly integrated into the gameplay so smoothly, that it is nearly impossible to see where in-game ends and pre-rendered begins.

 IGN: Parasite Eve II Review
While a lot of people like to complain about the inadequacies of prerendered 3D backgrounds and how they limit player interactivity and camera angles, there's no denying that if you want the best looking backgrounds possible on PlayStation that they have to be prerendered.
One of the biggest problems with this type of an environment is that most games that feature polygonal characters in prerendered settings, the characters stick out like a thumb and don't really fit their surroundings.
As good as the 3D characters and prerendered backgrounds are, they don't even come close to the visual quality offered in the astonishing CG cut scenes.

On the other hand, the mighty impressive recreation of the once prerendered Final Fantasy VII intro was a true tech demo as far as I understand it, or at the very least it was rendered on the actual PS3.
And the way that scene was set up it would have been so heavilly scripted that the player would have gotten to play every other second of the sequence, which no one should 'be looking forward to'.
Anyone who's played games for most of their lifetime knows that not all scripted sequences are prerendered and there is such thing as in-engine cinematics.

Pre-rendered - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A scene from Final Fantasy VII depicts Cloud and Aerith in front of a prerendered background.
The use of pre-rendered backgrounds and movies was made popular by the Resident Evil and Final Fantasy franchises on the original PlayStation, both of which use prerendered backgrounds and movies extensively to provide a visual presentation that is far greater than the console can provide with real-time 3D.
Pre-rendered graphics are used primarily as cut scenes in modern video games, where they are also known as full motion video.

That's why the "forget pre-rendered stuff" comment at the beginning of the trailer is framed by the killzone footage at the end.
then it says forget prerendered stuff b/c the demo is running real time unlike a lot of the demos from e3.

All the yelling and screaming will do from the ******s is make sony and guerilla's effort to build quality into the game unrelenting.
I would not be surprised if the final build of the game came very, very close to the prerendered target...unlike some other companies that don't really need to worry about living up to expectations because they monopolize their arena with exclusivity and licensing agreements (cough cough madden 2006 cough cough EA sports)

For prerendered sequences the cameras angles are fixed in preproduction so you're able to go in there and add a level of detail that wouldn't otherwise be possible.
For opening and ending movies, where you are establishing or ending something, I think prerendered cinemas are a very viable option.

The result is similarly mixed--the prerendered backgrounds aren't anywhere near as sharp as those found in the Bioware and Black Isle offerings, but the 3D character models are considerably better detailed than those found in most games of the genre.
