Tales of Asia - Preah Vihear
Preah Vihear is bordered by Stung Treng to the east, Kompong Thom to the south, Siem Reap to the southwest, Oddar Meanchey to the northwest, and Thailand to the north.
With the exception of Preah Vihear, Koh Ker, and the town of Tbeng Meanchey, this province is not suitable for Cambodia novices unless you are in the accompaniment of some kind of guide with firsthand knowledge of the area.
Preah Vihear's dusty little capital, this friendly little village is miles from nowhere but if you're going to any of the temple sites in the province you'll probably spend at least one night here.

Preah Vihear temple--It used to be easy to visit this spectacular mountaintop temple on the border between Cambodia and Thailand.
According to "Preah Vihear," a history of the temple by Vittorio Roveda, the temple complex was a monastery, which explains why the top-most sanctuary, on the edge of a cliff overlooking Cambodia, faces away from the view.

SUMMARY: Temple of Prean Vihear (Merits) Judgment - 15 June 1962   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Proceedings in the case concerning the Temple of Preah Vihear, between Cambodia and Thailand, were instituted on 6 October 1959 by an Application of the Government of Cambodia; the Government of Thailand having raised two preliminary objections, the Court, by its Judgment of 26 May 1961, found that it had jurisdiction.
The natural inference was that she had accepted the frontier at Preah Vihear as it was drawn on the map, irrespective of its correspondence with the watershed line.
Thailand had stated that having been, at all material times, in possession of Preah Vihear, she had had no need to raise the matter; she had indeed instanced the acts of her administrative authorities on the ground as evidence that she had never accepted the Annex I line at Preah Vihear.

During Cambodia's terrible civil war, Preah Vihear (or Khao Phra Viharn as the Thais call it) was the scene of regular battles between the Khmer Rouge, which used it as a fortress, and the Cambodian army.
Reaching Preah Vihear from Cambodia involves a two-day journey from Siem Reap, the town that serves Angkor Wat, on small roads that, although improved, would still not do your spine any favours.
The years of Khmer Rouge occupation have left their mark, but Preah Vihear has easily the most breathtaking location of any temple in either country, and even if you haven't narrowly escaped death there, a special energy and atmosphere.
