Dr. Koop - 'Prebiotic' Reduces Risk of Eczema in Infants   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Using this "prebiotic" boosts the development of an immature immune system, the scientists explained, and that can help prevent allergies.
"Although further studies are needed to understand completely the mechanism behind the immune-modulating effect of the studied prebiotics, the data support the potential role of prebiotics as dietary manipulation for primary allergy prevention during infancy," the study authors concluded.
One expert thinks the use of prebiotics to prevent infant allergies will continue to grow, but he cautions that more research is needed before this approach is proven.

Prebiotics : by Ray Sahelian, M.D. prebiotic benefit
Boehm's team developed an infant formula based on the prebiotic content of human breast milk and tested its ability to reduce the incidence of skin allergy in a group of newborns whose mothers were unable to start or continue breastfeeding.
Prebiotics can favorably affect development of the immune system of infants by altering the bacteria in the bowel and in so doing reduce the chances of skin allergy developing in at-risk infants.
Increasing knowledge of the metabolism of prebiotics by probiotics is allowing scientists to consider specifically targeting such dietary intervention tools at specific population groups and specific disease states.

Prebiotics are a category of functional food, defined as: Non-digestible food ingredients that beneficially affect the host by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activity of one or a limited number of bacteria in the colon, and thus improve host health.
Often, however, it is assumed that a prebiotic should increase the number and/or activity of bifidobacteria and lactic acid bacteria, as these groups of bacteria are claimed to have several beneficial effects on the host.

The complainant, who believed there were over 100 different prebiotic structures found in breast milk that could not be reproduced commercially, objected that the ad misleadingly implied that the addition of prebiotic compounds to follow-on milk had an equivalent effect on a child's defences against illness and infection to those in breast milk.
They said the aim of their own prebiotic mix was not to resemble those structures but to mimic the prebiotic effect and size distribution of breast milk oligosaccharides.
They said their prebiotic mix had been approved by the Scientific Committee for Food for use in infant and follow-on milks on the basis of safety and the suitability of the blend of prebiotics for infants.

This and other recent studies show that prebiotic chemistry -- the formation of the molecular building blocks necessary for the creation of life -- occurs in interstellar clouds long before that cloud collapses to form a new solar system with planets.
This fact suggests a universal prebiotic chemistry," said Jan M. Hollis of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. This suggests that the molecular building blocks for the creation of life on a new planet might get a head start in the dust of interstellar clouds.
A repository of prebiotic molecules might exist in these outer regions, which is also where comets are formed, the scientists said.
