 Spam Filtering II
Precision and recall are the standard metrics used in information literature, whereas miss rate and false positive rate are often used in reporting spam filtering results.
Precision and Recall are used in the table and are defined as follows.
False positives are especially important when selecting a mail filter to use, having to read the spam folder to find the false positives almost defeats the purpose of using a filter.

Dell recalls laptop power supplies InfoWorld News 2004-10-08 By Peter Sayer, IDG News Service
Dell (Profile, Products, Articles) Inc. is recalling some of the one million electrical adapters manufactured in China by Delta Electronics Inc. of Taipei and sold for use with Dell notebook computers, following seven reports of the adapters overheating.
They were sold between September 1998 and February 2002 for use with some of Dell's Latitude, Precision and Inspiron notebooks, and are marked with the name "Dell" and the part numbers "P/N 9364U," P/N 7832D" or "P/N 4983D," according to the CPSC.
Not all such adapters are being recalled, according to the Dell: owners should contact the company to find out whether their adapter is affected.

Methodological Issues in Measuring Alcohol Use
Third, a short recall period generally is inadequate for simultaneously assessing alcohol–related problems, many of which occur rarely and can be measured with sufficient precision only over a period of at least 1 year.
This approach, referred to as exact recall, is thought to minimize problems with memory loss and avoids the problems inherent in trying to describe a respondent’s “usual” pattern of intake.
First, the short recall period may not accurately represent the respondent’s typical consumption throughout the year, particularly in populations where drinking volumes or patterns vary according to season or are influenced by various holidays.

(b)        Then given the retrieved results (from your vector-space-modeled IR system that uses 0.2 as the similarity threshold and 10 as the number of documents to be retrieved), compute the recall and precision values.
The goal of this exercise is to learn how to implement a retrieval system based on a simple Vector Space Model and evaluate the retrieval results in terms of recall and precision.
Perform experiments in (a) parametric-tuning of your vector-space-modeled IR system, and (2) computing for recall and precision values and plotting precision vs. recall curves.

 Clause Identification
For all three parts of the shared task, the clause segmentation methods will be evaluated with the F rate, which is a combination of the precision and recall rates: F = 2*precision*recall / (recall+precision) [Rij79].
We have not used clauses labeled with FRAG or RRC, and all clause labels have been converted to S. The goal of this task is to come forward with machine learning methods which after a training phase can recognize the clause segmentation of the test data as well as possible.
Clauses are word sequences which contain a subject and a predicate.

 Minnesota Legislative News
Allegations in a proposed recall petition must be made with sufficient precision and detail to enable the challenged official and the electorate to make informed decisions in the recall process.
Because the allegations about the governor's book contract, his appearance at a wrestling event and a conflict of interest based on outrageous conduct relate to personal activities not specifically related to the performance of official duties, the conduct cannot be serious malfeasance in office as the legislature has defined that term in the recall statute.
In response to the proposed petition for recall, the governor submitted a memorandumfrom the attorney general's office in which the governor's office was advised that it was permissible under existing statutes for state funds to be used to pay security personnel that accompanied the governor on his book tour.

Extended Performance Graphs for Cluster Retrieval - Huijsmans, Sebe (ResearchIndex)
However precision and recall values as such offer an incomplete overview of the information retrieval system under study: information about system parameters like generality (the embedding of the relevant fraction), random performance and the effect of varying the scope is badly missed.
Abstract: Performance evaluations in Probabilistic Information Retrieval are often presented as Precision-Recall or PrecisionScope graphs avoiding the otherwise dominating effect of the embedding irrelevant fraction.

Disambiguation for Text Mining on the Web
We use the standard Precision and Recall measures: Precision denotes the ratio of spots correctly identified by the Disambiguator as on topic out of all the spots reported as being on topic.
Disambiguation is done on a particular data-set, which consists of a set of source Web-pages, a set of subjects and a set of on/off topic terms for disambiguation.
The Disambiguator tags each spot as being on topic or off topic, which is then used both to feed further processing stages, and displayed to the user together with the context and the evidence that led to the decision.

 Text Retrieval Quality: A Primer
An ideal goal for a retrieval engine is to increase both precision and recall by making improvements to the engine, i.e., the entire curve must move up and out to the right so that both recall and precision are higher at every point along the curve.

 Integrating Data and Document Warehouses
A document warehouse is a repository of textual information that is categorized and organized in such a way as to integrate semantically related texts so that they are accessible to end users and provide relatively high levels of information retrieval precision and recall in a decision-support environment.
We are also painfully aware of the two persistent problems with search engines: poor precision (the number of relevant documents returned compared to the number of irrelevant documents) and poor recall (the number of documents returned from the set of all documents that should have been returned).
Just as data warehouses are designed to accommodate numeric data and high-volume operations on that data, so too are document warehouses built to house textual information.

Full text search - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Searches that use Boolean operators (for example, "encyclopedia" AND "online" NOT "Encarta") can dramatically increase the precision of a free text search.
The deficiencies of free text searching have been addressed in two ways: By providing users with tools that enable them to express their search questions more precisely, and by developing new search algorithms that improve retrieval precision.
However, a controlled vocabulary search may have low recall: it may fail to retrieve some documents that are actually relevant to the search question.

Given the very preliminary implementation of the disambiguation routines and lack of adequate debugging, the results indicate that using MRDs (and even mapping from one into another) shows considerable potential for unsupervised and general word-sense disambiguation.
