Laser-guided bomb - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A laser-guided bomb (LGB) is a precision-guided munition (PGM) that uses semi-active laser homing to strike a designated target with greater accuracy than a free-fall bomb.
These weapons, such as the USAF Enhanced Paveway, use laser designation for precision attacks, but contain an inertial navigation system with GPS receiver for back-up, so that if the target illumination is lost or broken, the weapon will continue to home in on the GPS coordinates of the original target.
During their 1981 raid on the Iraqi nuclear reactor at Osirak, the Israeli Air Force chose to use unguided Mk 84 bombs rather than laser-guided weapons because they felt the need to designate the target would leave the attackers unacceptably vulnerable.

Precision-guided munition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Precision-guided munitions (smart munitions or smart bombs) are self-guiding weapons intended to maximize damage to the target while minimizing "collateral damage".
The reliability of precision-guided munitions appears to have fallen somewhat short of the promises made by the US Department of Defense.
The first successful experiments with guided bombs were conducted during World War II when television-guided bombs, flare sighted bombs and other steerable munitions were developed.

 M395 Precision-Guided Mortar Munition (PGMM)
The 120mm Precision Guided Mortar Munition (PGMM) will provide the battalion with a lethal, surgical strike capability to destroy high value targets beyond line of sight direct fire weapons.
The PGMM is a multi-mission, multi-mode precision munition capable of defeating high value point targets at double the range of conventional 120mm mortar ammunition (12km required, 15km desired).
The munition provides a man-in-the-loop discrimination option, in which the round guides toward laser-designated targets when specific target selection is critical.

Joint Direct Attack Munition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Research and development of an "adverse weather precision guided munition" began in 1992.
Adverse weather conditions limited employment of precision guided munitions.
On September 10, 2003, a B-2 Spirit bomber successfully released eighty (80) inert 500 pound (230 kg) JDAM munitions on a single sortie, demonstrating a saturation precision attack capability not thought possible in the early days of smart weapons.

 mok_pgm.htm
Although precision-guided munitions (PGMs), ranging from laser-guided bombs to Tomahawk cruise missiles, represented only a fraction of the total ordinance used in Iraq, the effect they had was electric.
The development of accurate precision-guided munitions was not revolutionary, but an evolutionary process that took the course of half a century.
Regardless of whether or not precision-guided munitions are part of a larger revolution in military, the implications of precision-guided munitions for the US military are significant.

Sea Power: Ghosts in the Machine: The Human Link in Precision Strike 'Kill Chain'
Information helps precision-guided munitions find and kill their targets, but it also saves lives by building a more complete picture of friendly and enemy forces.
Bringing precision firepower to bear in the densely packed Iraqi urban centers presented a major challenge to coalition command and control and necessitated the presence of human operators to guide the "end game" of a strike mission.
While the term "precision strike" conjures high technology - GPS satellites and laser target designators guiding smart weapons straight through the eye of a needle - there is an often-overlooked human aspect.
