 PREDICATE - Definition
S.] Note: Predicate is sometimes used in the United States for found or base; as, to predicate an argument on certain principles; to predicate a statement on information received.
Predicate is a term in logic, and used only in a single case, namely, when we affirm one thing of another.

Predicative verb - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A predicative verb is a verb that behaves as a grammatical adjective, that is, it predicates (qualifies or informs about the properties of its argument).
It is a special kind of stative verb.
Many languages do not use the present forms of the verb "to be" to separate an adjective from its noun: instead, these forms of the verb "to be" are understood as part of the adjective.

 Aristotle's Metaphysics
But there is no predicative complex corresponding to the fact that this is a horse in the way that there is such a complex corresponding to the fact that this horse is white.
The answer Aristotle proposes is that the cause of being of a substance (e.g., of a house) is the form or essence that is predicated of the matter (e.g., of the bricks and stones) that constitute that substance.
But the substantial form of a material compound, because it is predicated (accidentally) of the matter of the compound, is the cause of the compound's being the kind of thing that it is. The form is therefore, in a derivative way, the substance of the compound, as well.

The object predicative (oP) is the clause element which typically indicates a property of the person/animal/thing referred to by the direct object noun phrase.

Two types of structures for Complex Predicates in Romance Languages
The predicative verbs of the ‛to be’ type are a particularly promising (though up to now rather neglected) field of study when trying to answer such questions.
We argue that these properties can be explained by assuming that psych verb classes differ in their aspectual structure (Grimshaw 1990, Tenny 1994), and by further assuming that nominalization processes operate solely over the thematic structure of a predicate, but cannot refer to the aspectual structure of a verbal predicate.
Psych verbs refer to an attitudinal or emotional relation between two entities where the precise nature of this relation is part of the lexical meaning of the verb.

In contrast to predicative adjectives, attributive adjectives generally represent properties of the noun referent that are taken for granted, and are not 'up for discussion'.
The base form of a noun is its singular form, while the base form of verbs is the (bare) infinitive, and of adjectives and adverbs, the positive form.
The complementation of a verb thus consists in supplying all the elements that are necessary for that verb to function as a verb in a grammatical clause.

The object predicative complement and the infinitive of the object with infinitive construction share a position, followed by a field for bound content adverbials (Han bor i Lund ‘he lives in Lund’) and prepositional objects (Han ser på henne ‘he is looking at her’).
The object of a transitive verb may be a reflexive pronoun, as in he killed himself, where the reflexive can be replaced by another pronoun (he killed her) or a full noun phrase (he killed the man) without any other change than the one signalled by the choice of object.
With reflexive verb is meant such a use of verb + reflexive that is lexicalized as a semantically homogenous unit where the reflexive does not have a clear referent: in such a case, the reflexive pronoun cannot be replaced by a noun.

What is Ontology? Definitions by leading philosophers (Second part)
In most Indo-European languages we must distinguish at least eleven variants of the verb `to be', which leads to a rather rich variety of verb-type-ontologies.
The verb `to be' has its basic form in the context `S is P', where it denotes a binary relation.
By specification of variants of the verb `to be' we obtain variants of the verb-type-ontology, for example the ontology of things and properties and the set-theoretic ontology.

The original predicative verb has only the (traditional) function to mark tense (present) and person, and this is why it is interpreted as mere concomitant form to the past participle of the verb (I have planned something).
We don't have any neutral verb forms anymore as far as tense is concerned (for the predicative verb), thus, the listener does no longer interpret with regard to the context, but orientates himself by the grammatical morpheme.
Thus is also preserved the marking of the person as far as the verb is concerned by means of an ending or a subject pronoun, which has the function of word formation as well as a grammatical function (marking of the subject).
