Good Charlotte moves toward the darkness - ALBUM REVIEWS - MSNBC.com
Good Charlotte does give listeners a taste of its first album with “Predictable,” the first single from “The Chronicles of Life and Death.” But the use of a cello along with numerous complicated melody changes give the biggest hint that this album is not business as usual for the band.
Good Charlotte has left behind its megahit debut album “The Young and The Restless,” and in its place given birth to a darker sound.
Good Charlotte moves toward the darkness, Fatboy Slim gets a bit monotonous with "Palookaville", a special re-release of "Confessions" by Usher, De La Soul does it again with must-have "The Grind Date" and William Shatner is once again in the "talk" music business in this week's releases.

MTVe.COM Good Charlotte Ready New Album
The album's first single, "Predictable," introduces such musical sophistication with a string arrangement, but before you assume that Good Charlotte have morphed into Coldplay, singer Joel Madden breaks into a broken-hearted, spoken-word rant.
The dour title The Chronicles of Life and Death is the first indication that Good Charlotte have moved beyond juvenile humor — like celebrity bashing ("Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous"), heavy-handed self-deprecation ("The Young and the Hopeless") and the shallow, material differences between the sexes ("Girls and Boys") — that marked their last album.
The other indication that this definitely isn't the same pop-punk band as before hits you like a blind-sided slap almost immediately upon hearing a sample of their third album, which is due October 5: Absent from the six-song preview are the bouncy, pogo-inducing melodies, sing-songy vocals and accelerated tempos.
