Preferred number - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Preferred numbers are chosen such that when a product is manufactured in many different sizes, these will end up roughly equally spaced on a logarithmic scale.
In some applications more rounded values are desirable, either because the numbers from the normal series would imply an unrealistically high accuracy, or because an integer value is needed (e.g., the number of teeth in a gear).
For larger dimensions, preference is given to multiples of the modules 12 M (= 1.2 m), 15 M (= 1.5 m), 30 M (= 3 m), and 60 M (= 6 m).

The reason for the choice of twelve values is based on the (Willingness to recognize and respect the beliefs or practices of others) tolerance of 10% with which some resistors are made.
The series of preferred values are specified in IEC ((Click link for more info and facts about International Electrotechnical Commission) International Electrotechnical Commission) publication 60063 (1963-01).
The series of values for the current ratings of (Any igniter that is used to initiate the burning of a propellant) fuses does not adhere to the IEC standards, but uses ten equal intervals per decade.

INDIVIDUAL SUBJECTIVE PREFERENCE OF LISTENERS TO VOCAL MUSIC SOURCES IN RELATION TO THE SUBSEQUENT REVERBERATION TIME ...
Subjective preference evaluations for intra-individual changes are identified by two factors from subjective preference curves obtained from paired-comparison tests as well as their global case and individual differences.
Each peak value of the preference curves is shifted to the origin without losing any information, because a scale value is a relative and a linear scale.
For calculating the scale values of preference, a simple method [7] was used as an approximation for case V of Thurstone's law of comparative judgment [13].

EIA Resistor Series Values Table (E12-E192)
The preferred value system has its origins in the early years of the last century at a time when most resistors were carbon-graphite with relatively poor manufacturing tolerances.
The next reasonable value is 120 ohms because the 100 ohm resistor with a 10% tolerance is expected to have a value somewhere between 900 and 110 ohms.
The values in any decade can be derived by merely dividing or multiplying the table entries by powers of 10.

Spring (Java 2 Platform SE 5.0)
This force is modelled as linear function of the distance from the preferred value, but with two different constants -- one for the compressional force and one for the tensional one.
Those constants are specified by the minimum and maximum values of the spring such that a spring at its minimum value produces an equal and opposite force to that which is created when it is at its maximum value.
The minimum, preferred, maximum and value properties of the returned spring therefore report the current state of the appropriate properties in the component and track them as they change.

This means that the parent's proposed geometry is exactly the widget's preferred geometry (or that the widget has a flexible notion of "preferred" and feels that the proposal is good enough).
query_geometry() should return this value if at least one bit is set in the return flags that was not set in the proposed flags, or if any of the returned values (that have their flag bit set) differ from the corresponding proposed values.
A return value of XtGeometryNo means that both the parent and the child expressed interest in a field and that the child suggests that the field's current value is its preferred value.

value is 120 ohms because the 100 ohm resistor with a 10% tolerance is expected to have a value somewhere between 90 and 110 ohms.
Following this logic, the preferred values for 10% tolerance resistors between 100 and 1,000 ohms would be 100, 120, 150, 180, 220, 270, 330 and so on (rounded appropriately); this is the E12 series shown in the table below.

The value system has its origins in the early years of the last century at a time when most resistors were carbon-graphite with relatively poor manufacturing tolerances.
A value of 105 ohm resistor falls within the 10% tolerance range of the 100 ohm resistor, so the next value outside the range is 120.
Following this logic, the preferred values for 10% tolerance resistors between 100 and 1,000 ohms would be 100, 120, 150, 180, 220, 270, 330,...

Components - Part 2   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Following this logic, the preferred values for 10% tolerance resistors between 100 and 1,000Ω is a roughly logarithmic sequence of 100, 120, 150, 180, 220, 270, 330 and so on (rounded to the closest sensible value).
In each series, values may start from as low as 0.1 ohm, and may extend to several megohms, depending on the type of resistor and its intended purpose (and cost, of course).
In many cases, the preferred current will be too high and will cause excessive heating, but it must be understood that the regulation of the zener is not very good until it is operating at the lower limit of 10% rated power.

Basics of Developing Mission, Vision and Values Statements
Values represent the core priorities in the organization’s culture, including what drives members’ priorities and how they truly act in the organization, etc. Values are increasingly important in strategic planning.
Developing a values statement can be quick culture-specific, i.e., participants may use methods ranging from highly analytical and rational to highly creative and divergent, e.g., focused discussions, divergent experiences around daydreams, sharing stories, etc. Therefore, visit with the participants how they might like to arrive at description of their organizational values.
Record each preferred value on a flash card, then have each member “rank” the values with 1, 2, or 3 in terms of the priority needed by the organization with 3 indicating the value is very important to the organization and 1 is least important.

The 4 band resistor has a gold tolerance, or 5%, meaning that the true value of the resistor could be 5% more or less than 27000 Ohms, allowing values between 25650 to 28350 Ohms.
To simplify the writing of large resistor values, the abbreviations K and M are used for one thousand and one million.

Bush official blasted over religion talk / Paige said he preferred Christian values in schools
"All things equal, I would prefer to have a child in a school that has a strong appreciation for the values of the Christian community, where a child is taught to have a strong faith," Paige said in an interview published Monday by the Baptist Press, the news service of the Southern Baptist Convention.
The Rev. Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, said Paige's remarks showed "an astonishing mix of disrespect for both America's religious diversity and the public schools." In a letter faxed to the Department of Education, Lynn urged Paige to repudiate the remarks or step down.
Lengan declined to clarify whether Paige was suggesting that public schools should teach Christian values or that parents should send their children to parochial schools.
