		Variables are prefixed with a dollar symbol and no type need be specified in advance.
		Integer variables can be assigned using decimal (positive and negative), octal and hexadecimal notations.
		They can be specified using floating point notation, or two forms of scientific notation.

		This notation is described briefly in section 6 of the spec.
		There is also a rarely-used declaration called a notation, which creates a name-location pair that can be used to signal to an application that a parsed character data section is to be interpreted as having some kind of additional encoding, such as Base64 or PostScript.
		The "xml:" prefix does not have to be declared in an xmlns:xml attribute, though; the XML Namespaces recommendation says that xml: is by default bound to a particular namespace.

		They can also be expressed using prefix or postfix notations.
		A prefix notation, Polish notation, dispenses with parentheses; it is probably more often encountered now in its postfix form, reverse Polish notation.

	Definition: a definition and an analysis
		Specifically, although the HTML markup notation has some elements for the purpose, a detailed analysis shows that they are of very limited usefulness.
		This document outlines a markup system for definitions which allows for a great variety in giving a definition, yet lets the author of a document clearly indicate what parts are definitions, what the general kind of the definition is, and what the definiendum and alternate names for it are.
		Anyone is free to use the notation system outlined here, in XML or otherwise, but what is really needed is the incorporation of such a system to a markup language with generic semantics - something that HTML was once meant to be.
