Prehistoric Scotland - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Archaeology and geology continue to reveal the secrets of prehistoric Scotland, uncovering a complex and dramatic past before the
Glaciers then scoured their way across most of Britain, and it was only after the ice retreated that Scotland again became habitable, around 9600 BC.
Historic Scotland  ( http://www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/) provides access to many sites and monuments including most of those mentioned above, and others are freely accessible making exploring the distant past open to anyone with a guide book and map.

This western emphasis is a reflection of the fact that the islands of Orkney and Shetland, highly popular with prehistoric archaeologists from the 1940s to the 1980s, have seen less archaeological work that the Western Isles during the past 15 years.
Research across Scotland as a whole is being held back by the scarcity of funding and the general absence of co-ordinated research designs.

GO BRITANNIA! Scotland: A Brief History - Celtic Scotland
In fact, three fifths of Scotland are mountain, hill and wind-swept moorland, unsuitable for agriculture and therefore not interesting to the Romans.
Trouble at home meant that by the end of the fourth century, the remaining Roman outposts in Scotland were abandoned.
In the fourth century, a Latin poem describes the people of Tartessos on the Atlantic coast of Iberia trading with the inhabitants of two large islands, Ierne and Albion (Ireland and Scotland), people who spoke a Celtic language.

The Prehistoric Society - PPS Abstract
Parks of Garden, a Neolithic site in southern Scotland, is located within a thin wedge of peat which abuts a ridge of glacial moraine that stretches across the Upper Forth river valley.
Keyhole excavations for soil micromorphological study of these features and soils were conducted in 1997 as part of a larger project on identifying and characterising prehistoric cultivation from soil indicators in the field and in thin section.

In Scotland the Caledonii and Picti (in the north), made of the bulk of the early Celts, along with smaller tribes in southern Scotland such as the Votadini, Novantae and the Selgovae.

"But it would also be incredibly unusual for Scotland, because the lifestyle of the Mesolithic people meant they left few traces for us to find," she added.
THEY were the first people to live in Scotland, nomads who left little trace of their day-to-day lives.
Jane Downes, from Orkney College, one of the archaeologists leading the excavation at Mine Howe, said: "To find evidence of a settlement would be a first for Orkney.

 Prehistoric Fiction
This displays a fairly dramatic "landscape." Juvenile prehistoric fiction might be said to have started in the 60s, with a fairly steady publication rate since then, and "adult" prehistoric fiction seems to have started in the 80s, and been growing at a much faster rate.
These books, found by searching on-line bookstores and libraries, are arranged alphabetically by author, categorized into adult and juvenile, prehistoric, bronze age, iron age, and "related", in the Prehistoric Fiction Bibliography, including where possible, a description from the book jacket or cover, or library synopsis.
It was therefore virtually impossible for "prehistoric fiction" to arise until the ground was fertile enough to support it, at the end of the 19th century.

Stone Pages Archaeo News: Prehistoric finds at a housing site in Scotland
Large amounts of grooved ware pottery, a decorated ceramic that seems to have evolved in Scotland and is found across the UK at ceremonial monuments including henge earthworks and timber structures, were also found.
Tom Addyman, excavation director of Addyman Associates, who carried out the ongoing dig at the housing development, said: "This was part of a five-acre development where it was suspected from documents, including an aerial photograph taken in the 1940s, that there was evidence of prehistoric remains.
Mr Addyman added: "We found 750-odd pieces of grooved ware, which is one of the largest collections in the south-west of Scotland.
