  Trip to Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock)
Preikestolen is one of Stavanger's most popular tourist attractions.
Preikestolen is known as the Pulpit rock in English by the way (which is a translation of the Norwegian name) and I think you will understand why when you see the pictures on this page (or when you get to see it with your own eyes :-)
I was quite surprised that we were alone because this is one of the major tourist attractions in the area and it can be pretty crowded in the summer time.

The name Preikestolen means "the pulpit" (like the one in the church).

Preikestolen or Prekestolen, also known by the English translations of Preacher's Pulpit or Pulpit Rock, and by the old local name Hyvlatonnå, is a massive cliff 604 metres above Lysefjorden, opposite the Kjerag plateau, in Forsand, Norway.
There is trail from the Pulpit Rock lodge through different mountain landscapes.
The parking facility and hut are about 1.5 hours from Stavanger city by ferry and car.

The trip to Preikestolen itself is quite scenic and on the way you will find a little lake where you can take a swim and tables and benches where you can relax.
There are a few other trails in the area so if you like trekking it is possible to stay at the youth hostel Prekestolhytta which is located at the parking lot.

 Preikestolen
We made a last minute decision to visit Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) on Lysefjord after seeing it listed as a highlight of Norway in Lonely Planet.
We weren't sure if it was going to be worth the rather long and involved journey back and forth from Bergen but I'm glad to say that it was well worth the time and cost.
The morning after arriving from Bergen, we took the first ferry from Bergen to Stavanger (half price because we had Scanrail passes), then caught a 40 minute ferry from Stavanger to Tau, then a hour and a half bus ride from Tau to Preikestolhytta where we checked into the hostel.

The path leading up to Preikestolen has been improved a lot in the last years but you still need a pair of good shoes/boots.
On the way down we met quite a few on their way up and some had the traditional question "how much longer to Preikestolen?" :-) It is always fun serving a white lie telling them that there are still 3 hours to go just to see how people react.
