A Historical Analysis of the Phonology and Accentuation of the Prekmurje Dialect Of Slovene (Yugoslavia)
The Prekmurje dialect, on the northern periphery of the South Slavic dialects, has received little attention except for a 1909 monograph describing the sound system of a single village dialect, Cankova.
Prekmurje lies on the border of the Slovene and Serbo-Croatian Kajkavian dialect area, and is thus of importance to the as yet unanswered question of whether or not there exists a dialect continuum among the South Slavic dialects.

The present case study explores its implementation in the Prekmurje region which is home to a minority settlement of ethnic Hungarians.
The great majority of those lived in the autochthonous settlement area in the border region of Prekmurje: 7128 persons or 84% of all Hungarians in Slovenia; in the northern part, 59% of the population is Hungarian, and in the southern part, 48% of the population.
Prekmurje is an ethnically-mixed territory and institutionally regulated Slovene-Hungarian bilingual area in the north-eastern part of Slovenia.

Slovenia's Prekmurje region comprises the northeast corner of the country, bordering on Austria to the northwest, Hungary to the northeast and Croatia to southeast, with the Mura River forming a natural boundary with the rest of Slovenia to the southwest.
