Foundation was the third novel from science fiction pioneer Isaac Asimov, and was largely collected from previously published stories from the early fourties.
Foundation charts the future history of an initially scientific foundation, catalyzed by Hari Seldon, the creator of the prescient hybrid of psychology and mathematics known as psychohistory.

The Foundation Series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For example, the Foundation slides gradually into oligarchy and dictatorship prior to the appearance of the Mule, but, for the most part, the book treats that change as being necessary in Hari Seldon's plan, rather than mulling over whether it is on the whole positive or negative.
George Lucas used elements of the Foundation series to construct the universe in which Star Wars is set, including propulsion by hyper-drive, lightsabers (evolved from force field penknives), and the Galactic Empire (although Lucas' Empire was by definition evil, while Seldon openly says that in principle the First Empire is not evil).
This speculation, however, fails to account for the fact that the term Al-Qaida, Arabic for "The Foundation", was first used by the United States to describe followers of Osama bin Laden and is not used by that group to refer to itself.

Asimov's Foundation Novels - What order? | Ask MetaFilter
Actually it was the first Foundation book I read, and there's enough backstory in it that maybe you don't even need to read the rest original three.
It's basically Foundation with the serial numbers filed off (due to the fact that Asimov's heirs wouldn't let him play in the official universe) and some additions.
Forward the Foundation isn't a very good book in its own right, but if you know something about Asimov's life and the circumstances under which he finished up the book (it was his last work of fiction, and was published posthumously), it's one of the saddest reading experiences you'll ever have.

Since Prelude was written many years after the original Foundation trilogy, Asimov chose to tie in a few plot elements from the four-book Robot series and the old Empire trilogy.
Prelude describes "The Flight" period of Seldon's life during which he was hiding from the Emperor Cleon I to prevent psychohistory from falling into the wrong hands (or so he thinks).

 "Forward the Foundation" Review
IT IS POSSIBLE that the late Isaac Asimov knew when he was writing "Forward the Foundation" that it would be his last novel.
One of those recent novels was "Prelude to Foundation," in which the founder of "psychohistory," Hari Seldon (whose semi-mystical presence through a series of recordings played long after his death permeates the original "Foundation" stories), is presented as a young man embroiled in thrilling adventures.
The four novelettes each tell an interesting story that is a key to how the Foundation - or, more properly, Foundations, for there are two of them - came to be.

You'd think then that the same logic would apply to HarperPrism's decision to publish a "second Foundation trilogy" continuing what is arguably the best series of science fiction novels ever (it won a Hugo saying so in 1966), the "Foundation" series by the late Isaac Asimov.
They have hired "The Killer B's": Greg Benford, Greg Bear, and David Brin, to write what is being called "The Second Foundation Trilogy" (even though books by Asimov with "Foundation" in the title total seven, and there are more if you count the latter "Robot" novels).
FOUNDATION'S FEAR takes place after PRELUDE TO FOUNDATION and centers on scientist Hari Seldon's years developing Psychohistory, the science which will eventually allow him to predict the future.
