HAMILTON, Bermuda: Bermuda's premier has called for a national debate on independence from Britain and said the wealthy island can fully develop only if it breaks centuries-old colonial ties.
According to Reuters, Premier Alex Scott's center-left Progressive Labor Party supports independence but has not put the issue on the agenda since winning power for the first time in 1998.
Bermuda, with a population of 62,000, would be the third wealthiest country in the world based on a gross domestic product per capita of nearly $60,000.

Bermuda was part of Britain's American empire, referred to in London as "His Majesty's Islands of the Bermudas or Somer's Isles in America" - thus Bermuda is NOT part of the Caribbean (as far to the south as Dallas, Texas is from New York).
Bermuda's advantages - not those of then unexplored and uncharted mainland places - were what finally persuaded English financiers to invest more funding in colonial American adventures in and beyond Jamestown, despite substantial earlier losses in colonial adventures - and the colonists to participate.
Also, because Bermuda was a Royalist colony, not a religious one, it was less strict in religious discipline than the Pilgrim, Puritan and Catholic colonies, as they went through their growing pains and internal political or religious strife on the road to maturity.

SOUTHAMPTON, Bermuda May 17 (BestWire)-Bermuda expects to weather attempts in the U.S. Congress to tax U.S. subsidiary operations of Bermuda-based insurers, Premier Jennifer Smith told delegates at ICAP 2000, the International Captives Conference sponsored by IBC USA Conferences in Southampton.
The premier's comments came in opening remarks to the conference, which has attracted an international mix of 200 attendees.
Conference organizer Ann McGrath, director of new products and events for IBC, estimated the buyer-seller mix at "about 50/50" and said she was encouraged by "such a large turnout of international delegates." Risk managers, captive owners and legal and accounting professionals were well represented, although the comparative scarcity of local attendees was a surprise.
