Born in Buchans Junction, Newfoundland, Wells graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a BA in 1959 and Dalhousie Law School with an LL.B in 1962.
Wells first entered politics in 1966 when he was elected to the House of Assembly as a Liberal serving in the cabinet of Premier Joey Smallwood until 1968 when he resigned in protest of Smallwood's political authoritarianism.

 Newfoundland premier wants to have it both ways
The premier of Newfoundland and Labrador went on province-wide television Jan. 5, and opened his first round of negotiations with provincial employees by publicly announcing a wage freeze.
If this weren't enough, the premier then muddied the waters further by suggesting, once again in public, that the cost of raising wages for public employees could mean the elimination of 2,000 jobs across the province.
In effect, the premier is asking public sector unions to turn their backs on 2,000 members in return for a raise of those who remain.

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams is boycotting equalization talks in Ottawa, accusing Prime Minister Paul Martin of reneging on a deal he agreed to both privately and in public.
Williams said he was leaving because he says Newfoundland had a deal with Ottawa that would have given the province 100 per cent of offshore oil and gas revenues.
On one hand, I think Newfoundland has to wean itself off of transfer payments from Ottawa eventually, and I've always believed it a bit disingenuous for us to demand we be allowed to keep all our federal transfers and all our offshore oil revenues.

Obviously, Newfoundland's position as presented and defended by the Minister of Industry, is not the same today, if we compare it to the position he had when he was a member of parliament in St. John's.
Replacing the name of Newfoundland by Newfoundland and Labrador in the Terms of Union is a symbolic measure which acknowledges in a significant way that Labrador is an essential and full partner of the province, with its own geography, history and culture.
Essentially, it is to be understood from those words that the government of Newfoundland explicitly acknowledges that nothing in the terms of the motion of the government will have any impact on the delimitation of the border between Quebec and Newfoundland.

Sir James Spearman Winter (1845-1900) was a Newfoundland politician and Premier.
The Winter government faced criticism over the granting of railway contracts and was accused by the Liberal opposition of selling out Newfoundland's interest to the Reid family as the minister of finance in Winter's government was also on Reid's payroll as his legal council while the contract was being negotiated.
As a jurist, Winter represented Newfoundland at the 1887-1888 fisheries conference in Washington and was senior counsel for the British government when Newfoundland was before the arbitration tribunal at the Hague in 1910 over a fisheries dispute.

Scholarly historical research on Newfoundland and Labrador before 1949 was generally accomplished using archival sources found in Britain and, to a lesser extent, in Canada at the Public Archives in Ottawa.
Both Newfoundland and Canada had previously been the recipients, for educational and cultural purposes, of financial assistance from American philanthropic foundations; indeed, Memorial's establishment in 1925 and its operation for a decade afterwards was thanks to aid from the Carnegie Corporation.
Her bibliography of Newfoundland books, co-edited in the early 1980s with librarian Anne Alexander, was published in 1986 by the University of Toronto Press.

A couple of days before Christmas, Danny Williams, the Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador announced that all Canadian flags flying from provincial buildings in his province were to be taken down.
The premier insists that Prime Minister Paul Martin is reneging on a campaign promise that he made that Newfoundland could keep all of the revenues from such resources without seeing any reduction in the province’s equalization payments.
The release criticized the prime minister’s handling of the negotiations between the federal government and the provinces of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia regarding offshore resources.

The largest of the battlefield parks established in memory of Newfoundlanders who died in the First World War is in France at beaumont Hamel, nine kilometres directly north of the town of Albert.
In the Beaumont Hamel Memorial Park, which was officially opened by Earl Haig on June 7, 1925, the monument of the great bronze caribou, emblem of the Regiment, stands on the highest point overlooking the site of the St. John's Road and the slopes beyond.
