TORONTO — The premier of Ontario said Sunday that he won't let his province become the first Western government to allow the use of Islamic law to settle family disputes and that he will move to ban all religious arbitration.
Ontario's provincial government has been reviewing a report recommending that Shariah, or Islamic law, be allowed to settle family disputes like divorce and had said it would soon make a decision.
Ontario, the most populous province in Canada, has allowed Catholic and Jewish faith-based tribunals to settle family law matters on a voluntary basis since 1991.

TORONTO -- Ontario Premier Mike Harris, who heads the government of Canada's most-populous province, said Tuesday he would resign before his term ends.
Nicknamed Chainsaw when he became premier in 1995 for budget-cutting policies that became a national trend, Harris has faced controversy in the past 17 months over tainted water that killed seven people in Walkerton, Ontario.
The next Ontario provincial election must be held by the end of 2003.

Eves' campaign was riddled with gaffes, including the infamous news release calling the Liberal leader an "evil reptilian kitten eater" and on Tuesday, Eves referred to McGuinty's "sharp, little pointy head." Eves later apologized, calling the comment inappropriate.

Later, two of the employees who led the drive to decertify the union received an all-expenses-paid invitation directly from Premier Harris's office to be with him when he announced changes to the Ontario Labour Relations Act, including the stripping of powers of the OLRB referred to as "the Wal-Mart amendment".
