 Caribbean Net News: New Chief Justice appointed for Bermuda
HAMILTON, Bermuda: The Governor of Bermuda, Sir John Vereker, announced Thursday that Mr Richard Ground OBE, QC currently Chief Justice of the Turks and Caicos Islands will be the new Chief Justice of Bermuda.
The appointment of a new Chief Justice, occasioned by the retirement of Mr Austin Ward QC, had generated a widely publicised disagreement between the Governor of the British Crown colony and Bermuda Premier Alex Scott.
"The Secretary of State, when considering the Chief Justice appointment, took careful note of the views of the Hon Premier, which had been explained to him by the Governor and expressed to Mr Rammell [Overseas Territories Minister] directly by the Premier during his visit to London earlier this month.

Canada: In Quebec elections, the Quebec Liberal Party led by Jean Charest wins 45.9% of the votes (76 of 125 seats), against 33.2% (45) for Premier Bernard Landry's Parti Québécois and 18.3% (4) for the Action Démocratique du Québec.
In parliamentary elections, the Colorado Party (ANR-PC) wins 37 of 80 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, the Authentic Radical Liberal Party (PLRA) 21, the Dear Fatherland Movement (MPQ) 10, and the National Union of Ethical Citizens 10; in the Senate, the ANR-PC wins 16 of 45 seats, the PLRA 12, and the MPQ 7.
