Lesions to the medial preoptic area of the hypothalamus are known to severely impair the full expression of sexual and parenting behaviors (http://nawrot.psych.ndsu.nodak.edu).
The lack of gratification from sexual activity may be due to the fact that the medial preoptic area receives dopamine from the area ventralis of Tsai, serving as the "reward" for the brain for engaging in sexual activity.
An MRI session revealed a lack of activity in the medial preoptic area of the hypothalamus, which is responsible for sexual activity, sexual motivation, and parenting behaviors.

Also, it remains to be determined whether cortical projections to periLC areas that densely contain LC dendrites (ventromedial and caudodorsal to the LC 42, 65) are directed to the dendrites of noradrenergic neurons or to non-noradrenergic cells and dendrites also present in these areas.
By means of anterograde tracing with PHAL and CTb, we confirmed that the preoptic area dorsal to the supraoptic nucleus substantially innervates the nuclear core of the LC itself.
This area does not correspond to the ventral tegmental area previously reported to project to the LC using anterograde tracing methods 28,64.

The morphometry of astrocytes in the rostral preoptic area exhibits a diurnal rhythm on proestrus: relationship to the luteinizing hormone surge and effects of age.
Therefore, the purpose of this study was to focus on the rostral preoptic area where GnRH cell bodies reside.
In contrast, in middle-aged rats astrocyte surface area was significantly less than in young rats and did not change during the day.

Variation in aromatase activity in the medial preoptic area and plasma progesterone is associated with the onset of paternal behavior
The distribution of aromatase in the mammalian brain is limited primarily to hypothalamic and limbic brain areas [8, 10, 13], including the medial preoptic area (MPOA), bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH), and medial amygdala (MA).
Aromatase activity means for the medial preoptic area (MPOA), bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH), and hippocampus (HPC) correspond to the left axis.

The earliest study implicating the medial preoptic area/anterior hypothalamus (MPOA/AH) in the control of masculine reproductive behavior dates back to 1941, when Brookhart and Dey (1941) reported that sexual behavior was disrupted in male guinea pigs following the placement of lesions in this part of the diencephalon.
These lesions, which were located near the base of the brain between the optic chiasm and the pituitary stalk, caused no sign of testicular atrophy, thereby raising the possibility that pituitary gonadotrophin secretion and sexual behavior are controlled by different brain circuits.
Although the lesion-induced deficits in masculine copulatory behavior are similar in every species studied, the most detailed hormonal and behavioral analyses of preoptic lesion effects have been carried out using rats.

We are currently focusing how release of the neurotransmitter dopamine within the preoptic area, a site important for some maternal behaviors, influences how mothers respond to their pups.
This is being determined by measuring dopaminergic activity within the preoptic area during different stages of pregnancy and lactation, examining the dopaminergic projections to the preoptic area with neuroanatomical tracing methods, and pharmacologically manipulating dopaminergic activity in the preoptic area of virgin and lactating rats and observing changes in their maternal behavior.
A second area of research in the lab is devoted to the understanding of how emotional behaviors are regulated during lactation.

We are currently using this information to identify promising brain areas to investigate as potential sites of prolactin action in altering specific behavior patterns and changes in neuroendocrine function.
These studies have revealed that the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus and the preoptic area are potent sites of prolactin action in promoting foraging behavior but neither site is essential.
In contrast, the preoptic area does appear to be essential for the expression of prolactin-induced parental regurgitation feeding behavior.
