Presbyterianism is a form of church government, practiced by many (although not all) of those Protestant churches (known as Reformed churches), which historically subscribed to the teachings of John Calvin.
In Ireland the Presbyterian Church was formed from the Church of Scotland and later became the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.
In Canada, the largest Presbyterian Denomination is the Presbyterian Church in Canada, about seventy percent of which merged in 1925 with the Methodist Church, Canada, and the Congregational Union of Canada to form the United Church of Canada.

The Presbyterian Church in Canada was a Charter Member of both the Canadian Council of Churches, and the World Council of Churches, in 1944 and 1948 respectively.

In 1871, he became the first missionary to be commissioned by the Canada Presbyterian Church (predecessor of both the Presbyterian Church in Canada and the United Church of Canada), arriving in Formosa (Taiwan) on New Year's Eve, 1871.
John, New Brunswick, Mackay was elected Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, the highest position in the church.
There was a large delegation from Taiwan (including representatives from and the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan), the Presbyterian Church in Canada, the United Church of Canada, local, regional, and national dignitaries, and a number of his descendants from across North America.

The United Church was inaugurated on June 10, 1925 in Toronto, Ontario, when the Methodist Church, Canada, the Congregational Union of Canada, and 70 per cent of the Presbyterian Church in Canada entered into an organic union.
The final partner in the 1925 merger, the General Council of Union Churches of Western Canada, was the child of the early proposed Plan of Union that led to the founding of The United Church of Canada.
Approximately thirty percent of the Presbyterians refused to enter the merger and continued as the Presbyterian Church of Canada.
