This historic school building was completed in 1923, and was the largest high school east of the Mississippi, and one that quickly became a prestigious Midwestern institution.
Roosevelt High School rose four stories and covered two city blocks, 307,000-square feet, had more than 400 rooms, a 1,500-seat theater, two swimming pools, two gyms, an indoor track and terrazzo-and marble entrances.
The school was named for President Theodore Roosevelt and the school mascot was the teddy bear, which was inspired by the president.
