18 December 1963) is the President of Burundi and chairman of the National Council for the Defense of Democracy-Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD).
Nkurunziza was born in 1963 in Burundi's capital city of Bujumbura.

Emerging from crisis and entering a stage of national reconstruction and recovery, Burundi required significant support from its friends, the international community and specifically from donors and development partners, Pierre Nkurunziza, the recently elected President of Burundi, said at a Headquarters press conference this afternoon.
Nkurunziza was inaugurated on 26 August as the first democratically elected President since the start of Burundi’s civil war in 1993 after his party, the Forces for the Defence of Democracy (FDD), scored a decisive victory in national elections.
President Nkurunziza replied that the Summit had certainly not been a failure.  Of course, there were “problems here and there”, but steps had already been taken to reduce poverty, for instance.  There were also hopes for the very poor countries.

Burundi's President, Pierre Buyoya, this morning called on the Security Council to use its resources to compel the rebels in his country to give up violence, stressing that, if diplomatic efforts were not successful, other means would have to be taken to prevent the current peace process being held hostage.
The Facilitator of the Burundi peace process, appointed by African heads of State, is former South African President Nelson Mandela.  In January 2000, the Secretary-General appointed Berhanu Dinka (Ethiopia) as his Special Representative for the Great Lakes region.
On 1 November, a power-sharing plan came into force that allows for a Hutu and Tutsi President to alternate at the helm of the country.  The first term will be for 18 months.  The two main Hutu rebel groups have rejected the Facilitator’s plan and have vowed to continue fighting the Tutsi-dominated army.
