Chicago-born Janet Jagan was elected president of Guyana on December 15, 1997, becoming the first woman to lead the South American nation and one of only four women heads of state in the world today.
In 1957, she was appointed minister of labor, health, and housing and, from 1963 to 1964, served as minister of home affairs and as a member of the Senate.
From 1970 to 1997 she was president of the Union of Guyanese Journalists, and from 1973 to 1997 edited the newspaper Mirror.

Guyana is an indivisible, secular, democratic sovereign state in the course of transition from capitalism to socialism and shall be known as the Co-operative Republic of Guyana.
It is the duty of every citizen of Guyana wherever he may be and of every person in Guyana to respect the national flag, the coat of arms, the national anthem and the Constitution of Guyana, and to treat them with due and proper solemnity on all occasions.
A person born outside Guyana after the commencement of the Constitution shall become a citizen of Guyana at the date of his birth if at the date his father or his mother is a citizen of Guyana otherwise that by virtue of this article.

President Jagan issued a radio appeal not to drink water from the Omai or Essequibo rivers as dangerous levels of cyanide continue to flow downriver.
Guyana's government, overloaded with international debt and already in a state of bankruptcy, does not have the financial or technological means to cope with the cyanide flow, which has already reached the open waters of the Atlantic, potentially causing more damage to rich fishing waters of South America.
President Jagan admitted that many control functions are outside the government's present capacity due to their cost, and will take longer to implement than the present ecological protections.

As President of Guyana between 1985-1992, Hoyte will be remembered for the far-reaching electoral and economic reforms which laid the foundation for Guyana's economic recovery and a strengthening of the democratic culture.
The first was the sincerity with which Hoyte, then President, had assured him that he had nothing to do with the attack on him at the Square of the Revolution during the 1992 election campaign and his assurance that the election would reflect the will of the people.
Hoyte as President is the architect of the Iwokrama Rainforest Project and as Minister of the Government he had at various times responsibility for African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) affairs under the Lome Convention and was the group's spokesman for sugar from 1981-1983.

Assistant Secretary General Luigi Einaudi has written to Guyana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rudy Insanally, expressing the condolences of the Organization of American States (OAS) on Sunday’s passing of Desmond Hoyte, a former president of Guyana, who was leader of the opposition Peoples National Congress/Reform at the time of his death.
Speaking as well on the Secretary General’s behalf, Ambassador Einaudi recalled that Hoyte assumed the mantle of the Presidency of Guyana in 1985 at a critical time in the country’s history, asserting that he would be remembered for his courage in changing the economic and political system.
The following year, he was appointed President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and PNC Leader on Tuesday August 6, 1985 after the death of President Forbes Burnham and less than six months after his two children died in a road accident on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway.

President Jagdeo relayed to us that there were about 1200 schools in Guyana all in need of renovations, some in much worse condition than St. Rose’s.

Guyana is governed by three separate, but complementary, branches of Government: the Legislature (National Assembly), the Executive (President, Cabinet and Government Departments) and the Judiciary (Courts).  The power to run the country is divided among the three branches to create a system of checks and balances.
The President is  not a member of the National Assembly but has the power to attend and address the Assembly at any time.  The President has to assent to a bill passed by the National Assembly before the bill becomes law.
The Chancellor of the Judiciary is the chief representative of the judicial authority of Guyana.
