The Republic of Namibia is a country in southwestern Africa, on the Atlantic coast.
Namibia's bicameral parliament consists of the National Council with 26 seats, occupied by two members chosen from each regional council to serve six-year terms; and the National Assembly of 78 seats, of which 72 members are elected by popular vote, and 6 non-voting members are appointed by the president.
Namibia is the fourth largest exporter of non-fuel minerals in Africa, and the world's fifth largest producer of uranium.

Namibia had recognized the new Democratic Republic of the Congo, President Sam Nujoma of Namibia announced at a Headquarters press conference this morning.
President Nujoma said he had paid a state visit to Angola from 15 to 17 May and had discovered that UNITA officials occupied positions in the Government and the armed forces.
Namibia would actively participate in the June special session of the General Assembly to review implementation of Agenda 21, the programme of action adopted at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.

In a 1971 advisory opinion, the (A court established to settle disputes between members of the United Nations) International Court of Justice upheld UN authority over Namibia, determining that the South African presence in Namibia was illegal and that South Africa therefore was obligated to withdraw its administration from Namibia immediately.
It called for the holding of elections in Namibia under UN supervision and control, the cessation of all hostile acts by all parties, and restrictions on the activities of South African and Namibian military, paramilitary, and police.
At Mount Etjo, a game park outside (Capital of Namibia in the center of the country) Windhoek, in a special meeting of the Joint Commission on April 9, a plan was put in place to confine the South African forces to base and return PLAN elements to Angola.

Resolution 435 provided for South African troops to withdraw from Namibia one week before the elections, for PLAN fighters to report to assembly areas, for refugees to return and for 7 500 troops from the UN Transitional Assistance Group (UNTAG) to be deployed (this was reduced to 4 650).
South African troops withdrew totally from Namibia, SWAPO bases in Angola were dismantled, and the elected constituent assembly duly drew up a constitution for a multi-party democracy, with an executive president who could serve only two five-year terms.
Given the long years of conflict, the bitterness of the liberation war, and the legacy of racism and ethnic politics, Namibia has made a remarkable transition to domestic peace, although this is increasingly threatened by instability in neighbouring countries, especially Angola.
