  President of Sudan, former rebel leader refute slavery charge
President Omar al-Bashir, in Accra to participate in the 5th African-African American Summit, told reporters during a news conference that the persistent charge that his government condones slavery "is another device in the war of propaganda" against Sudan.
The president was accompanied to the press conference by two members of his government—Lam Akol, a former rebel leader of the opposition SPLA, and Agnes Lokodu, the female minister of labor and a former governor of a southern state.
The president said that a 1987 conference recommended that issues that divide north and south—political power sharing, economic development and the adequate addressing of the question of culture—could best be addressed by establishing a federal system, which now consists of 26 states.

Sudan is willing to accept a large increase in the number of foreign peacekeepers in Darfur with a stronger mandate to protect civilians, as long as they remain under African Union control, President Omar al-Bashir has told the Guardian.
Sudan has come under intense international pressure in recent weeks over the three-year conflict in its western region after the security council passed a resolution calling for 20,000 UN troops to replace the African Union's 7,000-strong force.
Sudan accepted a 10,000-strong UN force to monitor a peace deal with rebels in south Sudan last year.

Chinese President Hu Jintao urged his Sudanese counterpart Omar al-Bashir on Friday to work harder to bring more Darfur rebels into the peace process, a Sudanese official and the state-run SUNA news agency said.
In what appeared to be China's bluntest message to Sudan on the Darfur crisis, Hu urged President Omar al-Bashir in a face-to-face meeting to boost the U.N.'s "constructive role in realizing peace in Darfur" along with the African Union, the official Sudan news agency SUNA reported.
Sudan has defied a U.N. Security Council call for the underpowered African Union mission of 7,000 troops in the western region of Darfur to be taken over by a U.N. operation of 22,000 peacekeepers.

Slovenia's president carried a peace initiative for Sudan's troubled Darfur region to the U.N. Wednesday, calling for an international peace conference and urging individual citizens to pressure their governments to take action.
President Janez Drnovsek called on the U.N. Security Council to step up its involvement in the region, where an estimated 180,000 people have died and about 2 million have been displaced since conflict erupted between ethnic African tribes and government-supported Arab militias in 2003.
Drnovsek recently suggested that his country establish a camp in Sudan for 10,000 refugees, and said Slovenia had also offered to set up a field hospital and send demining experts to the region.
